If incubation temps are warm?

Was wondering if anyone had info on whether its harmful to have my veiled chameleon eggs sitting at 82 degrees F? or is it still ok?

Its hard atm to get it any lower as the temps here in SA are hot atm + cant get incubators around here so have to use ur own, homemade?

Any more info would be useful!

I am also in jhb and my temps in my incubator is staying constant at 26-27 degrees celsius. I have a homemade incubator and it is working fine for me at the moment

ive had to try now to lower my temps by actually taking the lid off my polystyrene incubator and the heaters out.

sitting at about 22 - 23 degrees celcius now.

apparently i read up on the net that its better to have lower temps so the eggs dont hatch early and the babies hatch bigger. The breeder i read about said her temps vary between 20 - 23.

i noticed my eggs were going funny colours and not staying white. i think they were too moist and coulda been drowning a lil or something.

I don't know much about breeding them, this is my first batch of eggs, but my eggs also turned a light brown colour. I don't know if it is from the sand she laid them in or why, but I am leaving the eggs in until I can be sure they are not going to hatch. How long have your eggs been incubating? Mine will be two months tomorrow.
Also my eggs starting to get harder, I asked her on the site if that is normal and the few responses that I got suggest that that is normal. Is yours also getting harder?
I am still learning about this, I have only bred snakes before, but I really would like to have this batch be succesful. I have 56 eggs left of the 58 that she laid. If you have any helpful hints to pass along to me I would really appreciate it.

Stryder, it seems your incubators temps have been fluctuating quite a lot.

My incubator stays at a constant of 26 but sometimes goes up to 27. The lid is on and there is 2 holes in the top side of the incubator.
The less water in the incubator the faster it is to warm up. In my incubator the water is about 10-15 cm deep with a submersible fish aquarium heater.

A constant 26 degrees is what works best for most breeders all over the world that breed veileds. And they are expected to hatch within 5-7 months of incubation at that temperature.
The fluctuations of your incubator, going from so hot, to a bit cooler and then all the way down to around 20-23 degrees might change the expected hatch date. You wont be able to tell when they will actualy hatch around what time.
You should keep checking the eggs every week or so, you should open the container lid and shake off the condensation on the lid when you do check on them. And this also allows for air exchanges/letting fresh air in.
I think that yours will end up hatching at a longer incubating duration, around 8-11 months.

Andre if your eggs are fine, the humidity is right, and the temp is around 26 degrees then you should expect them from 5-7 months.

Its true they have gone steadily from too high temperatures with too much humidity to lower temps with less humidity. i have now decided to stick with the temps they are at now which is approx between 20 - 23 degrees celcius.

I have noticed though that now that i reduced the humidity the eggs have gone white yet again and are no longer that funny brown colour i suspect the humidity was much too high so from now i want to keep it constant and not change anything, we will see how it goes. I hope they dont take longer than 7 months .

Thanks Chameleonneeds! I really appreciate your post. I kept wondering of the time it will take for the eggs to hatch and now I know that in another 3 months or so I might have little baby veileds climbing around.

Dont go on my exact words.

One thing to remember is to "not count your chickens (chameleons)before they hatch".

Keep us updated with the eggs, and I hope for the best with both of your eggs. Hopefuly in a couple months we will hear about babies that have hatched!

Edit: Oh and I dont think it is necessary for you to cut any eggs open Andre.
Unless they are quite obviously dead.

LOLS, ye it would not be advised :)

Yeah and I dont think you would really see much of an embryo just yet.
One thing you can try which I dont really like to do is candling the eggs, but like I said I dont do it so I cant tell you exactly how to do it.
But you need a torch, a strong one... and you put the egg close to it and have the torch on then like at the egg, if it is developing well you will see little veins in the egg.
But remember to place the egg back to the same position as it was in before you took it out of the vermiculite.

Haha yes I am, I love this forum though :)
