In for a bad winter, advice?

VA is in for a predicted terrible winter, including a few blizzards. My family can't afford to get a generator that would work for our house size. When I had Karma the winters were very mild and the power only went out for a couple hours, he was small and the most docile chameleon ever, I could easily keep him warm. Now I have Bobo, who is larger and loves moving around so I can't easily keep him warm. How can I keep his heat lamps on, or are there any better ways?

We have a propane camping lantern that gives off heat. Would the fumes harm him?

I am wondering the same thing for where I am now. My grandparents used to live here and I know their power would go out randomly. Since my husband and I bought the house, I think the power went off once and for about 20 mins max... but I know we are going to need to get something for the winter time.

On another note, I used to live in Hampton and Newport News VA. :)

Sorry I couldnt give you an answer. Sometimes I tend to ramble on........

Most people only plug a few important things into a generator though. you could always get a cheap one and plug in the heat lamps and oven if it is electric. We always just put the stuff from the fridge in the snow:)

i just plan to bring them to my mom's house. If it is late at night all my reptiles are sleeping in bed with me hehe

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who would do this! When it was really cold at night, my old veiled cham Gus would sleep on my pillow right beside my head to keep warm! :p

Living in South Dakota, we always get hit by blizzards... Winter is the worst time of year along with Autumn, I don't care if it is 'magical' or colorful, it's cold and it sucks.. To be quite honest, we don't have a generator and we have yet to get a black out. Now that we are moving in less than a month out to the lake, it's probably wise to get one. I'm sure that you can shop around online for a cheaper one, maybe Craigslist will have one?

Could you put heat packs in there in an emergency? Or a hot water bottle? Maybe stop short of a Deep Heat massage...

If only they made sweaters for chameleons. :D I shouldn't mention that, my mom is already obsessed with crochetting and making doll clothes, she would actually try to make one.

Haha I have thought about that, but it wouldn't make sense because reptiles can't produce their own body heat so there wouldn't be any heat to keep it...
