Hey everyone names Josh from the Neosho/Joplin Missouri area! Looking to get a male Veiled cham in a week or so and was wondering if I could find alittle help with a good relieable habitat. Thanks!

Well there is nothing "cheap" about setting up a habitat for a chameleon unless you can buy one on craigslist or something. Depending on the age of your chameleon, you will need a cage with plenty of heighth so you can attach branches and vines for climbing. If you are getting an adult chameleon the preferred cage size is 24 X 24 X 48. Have you done research and are you aware of all the things you will need for your set up, lighting,(two kinds) temperature and humidity gauges, branches, vines, plants, something to mist, either by hand, or a misting system, a dripper...there is much expense to owning these creatures and when you mentioned the word "cheap" I want to make sure you know you what you are getting into. And then there is the feeders!!!! Feeding the feeders, supplements etc.

Hey Emcee. First off let me start by telling you that even if you get a "cheap" cage/habitat, you will still end up spending a sizable amount of money on upkeep, furnishings, equipment, health care, food, lots of stuff through out the course of your animals lifetime. So if money is a major factor in your budget then I would recommend getting a snake or a goldfish, something else that doesnt require that much attention and financial upkeep. Secondly, here is a link to a site sponsor, LLL REPTILE, who offer a vieled cham package that includes a starter kit with everything you need to start raising your pet and a baby vieled cham as well. the complete kit costs less than $200 with free shipping.

I hope this info helps you :)

we don't know if it is a baby or not as he did not mention. So if not, then it will cost even more as he will need a bigger cage. Also, I do not like the moss that is sold with these packages. People put the moss in the cage cause they think it is safe as long as it came with the package. I feel moss is a potential chocking hazard being stringy and all. Just my opinion. I would not use moss in my cage but that is just me!!!

right, I understand josh didnt mention the age of the cham he was planning on getting that why I offered the different suggestion of getting that complete package that included the baby vieled cham.

I also dont use moss as a substrate but I have most of my cage filled with as many potted plants that can fit into it to soak up any excess water from the dripper/mister.

I know, you did a good thing, don't get me wrong! I was going to attach the link also but was not sure about the size and wanted to mention the moss thing. Not even using it as a substrate, but hanging it in the cage. I know there was one member who had their chameleon shoot a cricket, get some of it on their mouth and choke! That was enough for me! :)

hmm, I never even thought about using moss by hanging it but I assumed it added to the overall look of his habitat at the time, I can almost picture it.

Feeling a bit judged by ignorance before being helped. I pent roughly 285 dollars on a basic set up today. For the record... no moss. A tweak here and threand ill have a beautiful home for my little guy! I found that a rough 300 is a 'cheap' living and lovable condtion, nothing degradeing in any term. Why you pointed out my new knowledge for retiles is vividly ignorant, so I'm going to keep this short. Just new trying to learn. Thank you.

Listen, sorry we got off on the wrong foot there and did not mean to come off the wrong way if I did. Apologize for that truly! It is just that often times people don't realize the expense of keeping these guys. I wish you he best of luck and please don't let us scare you off! We are here to help and welcome any questions you may have in the future. We all started off just as you and learn as we go along. I learn something everyday on here too. It is a great place to educate yourself about chameleon care and I hope you will continue to do so. Again, sorry for the "unwelcome"welcome!!!!

People here just try to help out others. Carol is an awesome person who helps each and everyone that is a member of this forum.. Nobody thinks you are an idiot just cause you just joined. The same questions are answered over and over by people on here because we like to help out people that are new to chameleons, not because we care what others think, but because we care about how the chameleons are going to be taken care of. When you join this community, you join a community with one common interet, chameleons. Everything said here is in the best interest of the chameleons, not necessarily the owners. Like i said, if you dont like it, go find help somewhere else.

I can assure you though, nowhere will you find a more knowledgeable community than this one with as many helpful people such as Carol, Laurie, Jann, and the rest of members on here. You made a choice to join this forum, dont try to bash on the very people that try to help you out.

Thank you Veild chams! It is all about our LOVE for chameleons!:)

i agree. i've been told i've done alot wrong when i first came here but i didnt feel hurt. i felt scared for clair and wanted to fix everything and make her life happy. it's not about owners but more so the beautiful animals we all love so dearly. :)

PVC pipes
PVC elbow connectors
some plastic mesh (small holes) or aluminum window screen
zip ties
something for floor (plexiglass or pvc board)

^^ theres your cheap cage..

or go to DIY Cages, LLL Reptiles or Pangea Reptiles for affordable screen cages.

it's advised to have you husbandry RIGHT before you put your cham in the cage

we all have been corrected at one time or another and that is what this forum is all about...learning and sometimes learning from our mistakes too but in the process we are able to provide better care for our chameleons.

i have close to 2000 post...im not treated like a god, nor do i think i am..i think most of those posts where my questions beeing answered, lol :D..truthfully, i am confident in my knowledge on chams (been in the hobby of keeping specifically chameleons for about 18 years now)...but am on here because i learn little things here and there all the time, or finding out new techniques...dont get discouraged when someone mentions its not cheap (my current set up hase $1300.00 into it) and most people dont think 300.00 is very cheap (for a cham set up, that IS totally reasonable tho! :))..anyway good luck!!:D

Of course there are many ways to get your terrarium cheap ! Here are the points which can help you to save many many $s:

-Build your terrarium yourself if possible. Here you can save several hundret $s depending on the size you want
-Buy the plants from local ebay ads or craigslist etc. Americans know probably more sites then I do ;) Such plants are adapted to "normal" light supply, they are not full of herbicides and fungicides and they are much cheaper than the stuff from the diy stores
-Use branches from trees around your house and dont pay money for vines ! I will never understand why anybody is buying vines !
-Built a dripper yourself
-Buy light hoods from furniture shops and not from reptile shops ! Many normal light bulbs and fluorescent tubes are re-labelled from companies from the big reptile supply companies, in the end you pay 2-3 times higher prices for other labels !
-breed the feeder insects yourself. Roaches need nearly no time, no expensive food and they are very healthy !
-buy supplements in small quantities, if possible with other keepers which own only one or two chams. You will never need one complete package if you use it just for your cham. The supplements are only good for one or two years.

If you do all those things you can save much money with money saving on the wrong side.

I wasn't talking specifically about this forum. Thats why I said "these forums" so just cool your jets big guy. What I meant is that when new people join forums and ask a question someone with experience automatically assumes that that person has no knowledge of taking care of animals (which some do lol) and talks down to them as if they were so great and that person isn't worthy. NOT SAYING THATS HOW YOU GUYS ARE! I've been keeping herps since I was 11 years old and and I asked a leopard gecko morph question on another forum and instantly a moderator came in and suggested that I might want to review my husbandry and knowledge just because I'm not well versed In morphs... talking down and being ignorant. I thank everyone on these forums for their help and they are life savers to people that are new to the hobby and I was never trying to bash anyone I just know how it feels to be talked down to and was trying to cheer a new member up, so chill..

For my branches in my set up I just went outside and cut them off some of my trees... I think thats what most people do though, you gotta clean them off first and take the leaves off of them. and for vines you can buy a small pothos plant that will grow and become a huge vine, and it keeps your humidity up, and as for a dripper you can poke a hole in a water jug or even a foam cup
