incandescent bulbs?

Someone told me that regular house incandescent bulbs give off uvb rays. Is this true, or did they just have no idea what they were talking about?

All bulbs give off UVA, not UVB unless they say so, and some coil bulbs (reptile kind) even give off UVC which is bad.

Now does the repti glow 5.o compact flourescent give off UVC? because i know one breeder that has been using that for a while, and none of his chams have any eye problems. I wouldn't use one, im just curious

I'm not sure but I do know that they don't seem to be considered safe yet. The reptisun compacts seem to be safe (the new ones.) but they still do not offer the range that a tube light would. it would all be in a small spot. I just wouldn't use one, especially so with a baby.

crazy pet lady, i love your avitar! shin chan ftw...

anyway, what i was going to say is although most coiled bulbs in the past gave off uvc rays, they are infact getting better about it, not saying its an acceptable substitute for the long time staple linear tube bulb, but there is an emergence of more and more bulbs on the market that are safer for chams than they used to be :)

that and reptiglo/repti sun seems like a reputable brand imo

Some household CFL lamps give off UVB. Since I don't have a full spectrum anylizer I can't say whether or not there is other UV in the light I 'tested' that we might not want.

This does not mean you can house your cham in a cage with a household CFL and expect him to get the right amount/type of UVB.

The best thing to do, is stick to the tried and true methods other keepers have had great success with, ReptiSun 5.0 linear tubes. If you have a reptarium or a mesh cage that doesn't let much light through, use the ReptiSun 10.0.

You can check out the UV Guide website here: Link There is a lot of learning to be had at this site.

This is one of the pages at the UV Guide that talks about UVB and screen cages.
