They do use this area for fat storage and potentially water as well, although, never proven.
 
Dr. Huskey does very nice skeletal preps. His Meller's Chameleon prep isn't a Ch. (T.) melleri though, it looks like a female C. p. parsonii. Also, the compression seen on the entoglossus about a cm from the end on both chameleon preps is an artifact of the mounting process as in reality, it is completely cylindrical and parallel sided there.

My dad knew a kid in highschool that used to take roadkill and peice the bones together for the art show. He had all kinds of birds and cats in fighting poses.
