intestinal prolapse

Little Jewel, my 12 - 15 gram jackson had this horrible prolapse on Monday 19th, here is the picture of the prolapse. It was touch & go at the vets but he got the prolapse back in. Only 4 hours later she prolapsed again, this time I was able to put it back after having helped the vet the first time!

Here she is shedding and doing well a week later. I am one happy mother.:)

I did a couple of things, the first thing I did was sit for several hours with my finger supporting her rear to help avoid another prolapse. I also checked her about every 4 hours to make she she had not prolapsed again.
Starting the next day I made bug juice (pedalite, ensure, & blend with crickets - then strain) and dripped several ounces on her mouth one small drip at a time. This was in addition to misting her several times a day until she drank.
On Friday she & I spent a couple of hours out in the sunshine, and Sunday afternoon I moved her from the montane room, to upstairs. This was because often times higher temps will help in the recovery of a sick chameleon. The montane room is cooler and very humid, where as upstairs with the panthers and veileds is warmer and not as humid. I put her in a tub with a uvb above her and no basking light as the ambient room temp there is 78. I lined the bottom of her tub with with wet paper towels and sprayed the sides so her humidity stayed high. Finally she both ate and pooped yesterday!!! Now we are taking it one day at a time.

She is still in her tub, in fact one of the picture shows her above the tub at the highest point on her plant, over looking her world.

I am not advising other people go the route I took, it is just what worked for me.

just curious what vet ya went to in Havre? I honestly don't remeber Havre having any Herp vets.

Havre wouldn't know a herp vet if it bit tthem on the ***. I bought Mader's book "Reptile Surgery & Medicine" for the Dr McCann's office and that along with phone support from Dr Ivan Alfonso, is how I do vet care. Thank God for Ivan Alfonso!!!:)

Well it sounds like you definitely did the right things. Especially since she pooped and it didn't prolapse again...you just might be out of the woods with her. I'll keep my fingers crossed for Jewel...and toes too..LOL!

Lmao!!! thats what i thought unless its a damn cow or horse they don't know a damn thing. Glad you got your bases covered and glad your little Jewel is doin better :)

Well that poor little town never knew what a chameleon was until Laurie moved there. At least they are willing to work with her. That's really wonderful.

Dr. Laurie, I am so glad to hear that little Jewel is doing well. What would we do in the chameleon world without Dr. Alfonso?

Oh Laurie! How awful. I would be in bits if that was me. It was bad enough when Tommy got his locust stuck. I think they just like to scare us beyond belief! I am so glad she is doing well, she's such a cute l'il girl!
