Is that burn?

Hi guys, I do think this might be a burn. He is 3,5 months old veiled in a tank with screen top. I am using Solar Raptor HID 70 W Flood lamp. I believe it might be a little closer than the distance they advise to keep. What should I do now? He doesnt seem to worry about that at all, I hope its nothing serious. Thanks for watching guys.

I do not see anything that looks wrong in the picture. Where are you talking about? Are you keeping him in a fish tank or a terrarium? Fish tanks are not suitable housing for chameleons.

Hey carol, I am talking about the spot between his eyes where the casque starts, its pretty noticeable on those three pictures. Its been black since last week and remains black even during night.

I don't see anything either. They will start to get dark along their casque as they get older. I attached a picture of Omar and you can see a similar dark area on his casque. I was just looking at him today and his casque and the ridges above his eyes are very brown. What do you have on the bottom of your enclosure? There should be no substrate in a chameleon's cage. If it is dirt it should be covered with river rock. I am actually having problems with fungus gnats and am going to redo the bottom of Omar's cage by adding more sand to the dirt, a layer of sand, topped with landscape fabric then river rock on top of that. I also drilled several holes in the bottom of the cage so water can drain into a bin under the cage.

oh I did not see the three pics, I just thought there was one. I still don't think it is anything. I think if anything would burn, it would be the casque first and not between the eyes anyways as it is higher up.

he is a great looking little guy! I wouldn't be concerned with it. It looks to me like just a normal changing in color as he matures. How close is he able to get to his heat lamp and what is the wattage on it? From what I've seen, most commonly the burns will occure on the ridge of the casque or along his spinal ridge.

Ridgebax, as a substrate I used organic turf with a sand 1:1. There is also half inch of vermiculite on the bottom. There is no drainage, because there isnt needed one. I had to sift the turf so its just a dust with no big pieces left, but its all kept moist, so its not stiring up, also there is no fungus so far.
All I was worried about was that little piece of burn-looking skin, everything else is working fine.

Veileds are notorious for eating things they shouldnt. ALso, bugs tend to bury in dirt and whatnot, and should your cham try to eat that bug and ingests dirt, then it can cause an impaction, which is why we recommend a bare floor.
