Is this ok for a laying bin?

Until I finish building her a larger cage, I planted some live plants in her laying bin to save some room. Is that ok? They are planted on the outside edges. The bin is 15 inches wide so she still has room to dig. The bin is only 11inches tall though. I know 12 was the minimum suggested but that’s all I could find that would actually fit in her cage. I did add more soil so that she has the full 11 inches to dig downward.

For now that size is okay.....but when she is transferred into the larger cage get a deeper one.!

That is a perfectly acceptable lay bin in terms of dementions. You have soil and what else in it?

It is just organic potting soil and water.

I'd do a 50/50 mix of play sand and organic soil. Lets the water drain through well and holds tunnels very nicely. My females have all laid in their 3 gallon plant pots instead of their appropriately sized laybins.

I would try not to disturb her once she is actually digging. She may abandon the effort and this could lead to other problems. She may do some test holes and seem to abandon the area, but this can be totally normal. You can start a tunnel for her to show her that the area is good for laying.

Good point! She hasn’t been digging yet, so hopefully the one she has will be fine for now...at least until she gets her new enclosure this summer.

I would invest in a baby monitor, just a cheap wifi one from amazon will do, this will allow her to dig in peace and allow u to watch her dig! if it seems like she doesn't want to dig maybe try covering her cage with a breathable cloth. this can ensure she feels safe and secure to lay

Update: I found a 5-gallon bucket that fits the 12x12 requirement. I attached some fake foliage (just for looks) to try to hide the ugly bucket.
