ive been thinking hard about how my jackson feels living in a cage outside, if i was to release him in my backyard do you think he would be able to survive for him self he is wild caught he was crossing the street by my house. whats your guys input on releasing him?

Did you capture him? where are you located? when i was a child i would catch garter snakes, enjoy them a while and then release them near where i found them. i think that releasing him back to the wild would be the most humane thing to do. if you really enjoyed your time with him maybe consider a captive bred

I dont understand why you are thinking about letting him loose? are you unable to take care of him anymore? If you need to let him go im sure Someone on here would be happy to take him from you.

If jacksons are native to your area, he should do just as fine as any other jacksons if you were to let him go. You'd open him up to predators getting a hold of him though. That's a dice roll most animals have to take in the wild...

i live in in wahiawa hawaii, and my back yard is a forest. i do have cats that my neighbors lets roam around but my .22 has been making quick work of the ones always trying to eat my ducklings. i just have been working so much and i know he hasnt been getting the attention hes needed. i know theres others here on hawaii that have jacksons, so if you want to add beautiful male to your family lmk.

Even though you live in HI and jackson's occur in the wild there, they are not native, so are subject to removal or trapping. They do not have any protected status. Some people may kill them on sight. They do prey on native insects that are also under stress from pesticides, introduced predatory insects, and loss of habitat. I would not release him again. Finding him another home in an outdoor cage setup would be kindest IMHO.

Check out Mary Lovein's site and work, if you are not familiar with it. Her book "Chameleons in the Garden" is about the Jackson's chameleons on her property on the Big Island, and she talks about having started by keeping them as pets, and later ceasing to cage them or bring them indoors, but still watching and appreciating the ones in her yard, and trying to make it a chameleon-friendly place. The book is available through the Forums Bookstore, but you may be able to get it more quickly locally.

hey

watch any nature special and you will see nature is cruel. you are obviously caring. id say keep they lil guy and give him all he needs in life and he will be much happier.

EDIT i mean come on is his prey gonna be gut loaded and supplemented in the wild on a careful schedule??? measured perfectly so he doesn't choke? giving to him in a prefect amount so he is healthy and doesn't starve yet not obese? his diet varied with human precision?

If you release it I would release it in the same area where you found it. It may not live as long in the wild as in captivity...but its free to go where it wants to and do what's natural to it.

Mary and I have talked for many years and she loves the Jackson's chameleons coming to her yard. She has posted "thousands" of pictures on other forums of the ones that come to her yard.

You can have a "feeding station" and provide water with a hose with a misting nozzle on the end from time to time. You may end up with more coming to your yard.

i spray the bushes around my yard almost everyday, and now ive seen a heavy increase in golden dust geckos :D. and does anyone have any sugguestions on a feeding station?
