Jackson's Shedding/Urate Questions

Hey everyone,

My sub-adult male Jackson's is going through his first shed in my care.

His behavior seems normal, albeit a little restless, so I've been keeping a pretty close eye on him. I've increased misting frequencies and was gently petting him last night on the side that he was shedding more heavily on. When I pet the side of him that he was shedding on, he did not shy away or act in any way that this behavior was bothering him and in fact would close his eyes briefly. However, when I would pet his non-shedding side he would act his typical slightly suspicious self. I used a product made by Zilla (which I've read this morning perhaps is not the greatest company) called Tropical mist that has aloe vera gel, vitamins B1 and B3, an emollient and water on him last night in an attempt to help his shedding. Not really thinking too much of it then it did seem to help with his skin.

Fast-forward 12 hours and his shed is coming along nicely. He is gaping is mouth every so often which I've read is an attempt on his part to crack and remove some of the dried skin from his face, which is shedding heavily. He drank very heavily this morning and for the first time defecated in my view. Having never saw him or my Veiled defecate before, I was unaware as what to expect. At first I thought he was pooping and was in shock and horror at the red protrusion coming from his body. It then dawned on me that he was urinating and that was presumably his penis. Fascinating thing to watch, if you ever catch it. His urate came out fine, but was surrounded by some type of gel. In looking up more on the topic, it seems that a semen plug could be possible. But upon further inspection the discharge is not the same white colour of the urate, but rather a clear almost egg white looking substance.

My two current theories (which I'd greatly appreciate your input on) are the following:

1) Something is drastically wrong with my chameleon and I haven't the slightest clue what it is.

2) When spraying him last night with the Tropical Mist he ingested some and has passed it through his system. The discharge looks suspiciously like aloe vera gel were it just slightly more runny.

Thoughts/opinions?

Needless to say, I will not be using the mist any further and will stick to using warm water, more frequently during subsequent sheds.

Most reptiles expel a clear wattery like substance with fecal and urate material. They can expel a very small amount of actual urine along with feces and the concentrated urates. As long as his urates are nice and white and he isn't passing a large amount of this clear fluid I wouldn't give it much concern. I will however defer to forum members experienced with Jackson's.

As for the spray I don't think that would cause what you are seeing today but I also wouldn't use it on your Cham. I'm interested in what the Jackson's owners will say.

Everything you have reported is normal. The white thing, indeed, is a sperm plug. I would not use the zilla product, although I doubt it did any harm.

The gaping is probably just an attempt by your cham to remove shedding skin. It could also be that he is having a harder imte breating through his nostrils because of the shedding (nothing to worry about, it will resolve itself).

You are doing the right thing by increasing mistings. If you can add a humidifier to the room that could be helpful too. My Jackson has a hard time with shedding around his horns and head. I usually give him a couple of long warm showers throughout the shedding process. After he has soaked a while, a wet Q-tip can be used to gently rub areas where the skin is stuck.

Thank you so much for your timely replies!

I feel so bad for him, he's acting so grumpy. Puffing up and wiggling around, I just really got concerned with the urate thing, seeing as all of his other behavior was normal. He is also positioned close enough to the screen top to stick his horns through it, which he has done often today and to my knowledge, never before. Should I move his perches down so he can't do that?

Also, I thought sperm plugs were white-ish in colour? This discharge was very clear and was about three times the volume of the urate.

I can't wait for this shedding thing to be over with, it makes me a worried daddy! :(

Watching a male chameleon defecating can be a very scary experience if you don't know about hemipenes! Until I got my Jackson I had never seen hemipenes as my male Veiled never showed them. Monty gets his out every time when he poops. I have also noticed that they seem to move independantly of each other too, rather like his eyes, which I found highly amusing! Check out my blog on the subject - it also has photos showing the sperm deposit (I don't like the term 'plug' for the normal everyday sperm deposit that occurs during defecation - it seems rather misleading to me). A sperm plug forms when a male doesn't expel these deposits and they can end up causing a blockage and become impacted in the tail base, requiring removal by a vet or someone with experience of removing such things. I have seen this flagged up more on here in male Veileds than in other species.

Enough waffling from me, lol, here's my blog: https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/miss-lily/777-hemipenes-sperm-deposits.html

Sperm plugs turn white as they dry, but are clearish when fresh...

Here is a picture I found of what it can look like:

That is exactly what I saw!

Thank you so much for putting my worried mind at rest.

I can now go back to watching him be grumpy without concern that he is not well. :p

Glad to see a responsible cham owner asking questions.
Jackson's are sweet and can live a healthy life when given the right care.
This is a very good Jackson's caresheet which you may find useful:

Two of the most important things about Jackson's are being careful to not oversupplement and to make sure they are hydrated enough.

You can always post pics of your cham for everyone to ooh and aah over :)
