jumping panther baby

I have never seen a baby, or adult for that matter, do this repeatedly. He was fine afterward but I had to move him to a bin with lower hanging branches to make sure he did not harm himself. He made the attempt 3 times that I know of. Has anyone else ever had one jump like this?

I've only had them do it when I accidentally scare them or have them on my hands. Does that one do it when it hasnt seen you yet?

Yes. Thats whats so bizarre. I watched from a distance before setting up the camera. He climbs to the top of the tallest branch, looks at the side carefully then gets his footing then takes a leap. He never looked in my direction at all.

Strange, maybe he doesnt like his cage? Or maybe he wants a bigger/taller one? Or, if he is in there with other babies, maybe he doesnt like the other babies being with him? Or it could even be something in the cage that he doesn't like. You can always put a towel or something soft at the bottom of the cage so he doesnt hurt himself if a cage change doesnt help.

Maybe someone else with more experience can help? I'm only speculating about what it could be from my limited knowledge and experience.

For now he is in another bin with lower hanging branches. He seems to have gotten past his obsession with trying to reach the rim. I will keep an eye on that one though. He might be a smarter than average panther ;)

I didnt even think about trying to escape! I had one that would find the tallest branch or leaf that was against the side of the tub and he would sit there all day just trying to climb out, only stopping to eat and drink or bask a little. One day a pothos leaf either grew big enough or moved into position for the baby to reach the edge. He was lost all day and I finally found him in another room on my couch! Its a good thing my dogs are too lazy and scared of chameleons to try and get them! He only stopped when I put him in a taller cage and made sure nothing was touching the sides so he didnt have the opportunity to even try to climb out.

HAHA, that little one is legitimately jumping.

Im going to vote with, maybe it is smarter than the average panther. :D

On this same note, how many of you have seen a panther literally walk backwards back up the stick the exact way the came down?

Sorry, but I laughed myself sick :D
I bet all that little guy could see was that tall wall, and he was thinking,
...oh yeah, I can make that, then I'm FREEEEEEEE

The thud is him hitting the bottom if the bin. He is still trying to reach the top in the new bin but he does not have the launching platform he did in the other so he can't jump. Thanks for the comments guys!
