Just a rant..

"What else is it that should trace the insuperable line? Is it the faculty of reason, or perhaps, the faculty for discourse?...the question is not, Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but, Can they suffer? Why should the law refuse its protection to any sensitive being?... The time will come when humanity will extend its mantle over everything which breathes... "
Jeremy Bentham (1748 - 1832)

I got carded at Petsmart when buying a hermit crab and again when buying a hamster when I was 24. They and Petco have mandatory regulations that you have to be 18 to buy an animal or have a parent with you, and my stores ask for ID if you look too young. My local pet shop as well will refuse to sell to children, but they're also awesome and will refuse to sell to anyone they think won't take care of an animal properly.

You hear that some of the chain stores occasionally have little events about dog or cat care but nothing about the exotics. Why is that?
In Cleveland, OH there isn't enough weekends in the year for the local reptile rescue! They're booked almost solid because all the local Petcos and Petsmarts want them in on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. I think it has a lot to do with the stores, and with what rescues are available to come. Remember that they only support registered charities, and there aren't many of those that cater to the scaly kind.

If there is anything left breathing...

Like that, though.
