Just came home to find my panther dead :(

There are too many possibilities and overheating does have some symptoms you would have seen, gapping, sticking to the bottom areas, pacing to get out and away from the heat. Your ambient was right in range and the lower cage should have been ok. I would suspect an underlying infection, organ failure or heavy parasite load as these are the most common things that show little outward signs but can be fatal. Chameleons are low on the food chain and try to hide their vulnerabilities for survival's sake.
One other possibility is poisoning from the new food source. Do you know what the black crickets were fed or how they were kept? They were the most recent change. If they ate moldy food that could cause problems.

i am absolutely gutted, totally gutted.

my male panther has died. I came in from work and immediately went over to mist him as i always do and found him on the floor of his vivarium. His whole face is black. He was fine when i went to work 8 hours ago.

Can anyone tell me what the cause is? The black mouth is like nothing i have ever seen before.

I am in bits

RIP George x
I am sorry to read this, and for your loss - he truly was beautiful.
I have dealt with knowing they are sick and doing all you can to help them, but I can’t imagine the shock and hurt from a loss like that with no warning.

@Kat_72 while I agree with most of what you say. 62 temps at night are completely fine. I live in Pittsburgh and my temps get to the high 50s at our coldest here.
Ok sorry for any misinformation on my end. I was told by One of the sponsors that 65 as a low wasn’t recommended so I just ran with that. There’s so much information to learn from experience and seasoned keepers so thanks for the correction. Does that mean I can drop my heat bill next winter....

Sorry for your loss :( ... he did look a bit dehydrated though just from how his eyes were sunken in. I’m sorry.
