Juvenile Pygmy Brev Question

Hey Gang.... I just ordered a trio of juvenile pygmy brevs (not even two months old), and am also ordering crickets for them. I realized that I'm not sure how many pinheads I should order the first time around. For those who have raised neonate brevs, approximately how many crickets do they eat a day? Those pinheads are awwwwfully tiny!

Babies eat alot so Im not sure. I bought about 200 pinheads for (6) 3 day old pygs and they were gone in 5days, along with about 30 fruit flies. Just dump a dozen in and see how fast they get eaten. last thing you want is for them to make their way to the bottom and not be found, die, or grow huge and attack the pygs. Each Pyg is different on appetite. I dump about 40 fruitflies every 3-4 days and about 25 crickets once a week.

Holy cow that is a ton of food for even 6 baby pygs--I would venture to say more are escaping that are getting eaten. The lowest you can order is generally 250-500, and they will probably grow too large before you can feed them off. 2 months old are considerably larger than freshly hatched. I would order the lowest number of pins you can. Pygs won't consume like baby Panthers or Veileds that eat up to 20 pins daily at some points.

At 2 months, pinheads are a bit small for them. I would order in week olds, or if your supplier is really cool, week and a half olds, and keep them cool.. they will grow slower. Not too cool, or they will die. I feed about 3 crickets per animal at a feeding.

They will happily eat hydei flies at that age, too, and they can handle regular house flies as well. You can order housefly pupae from http://www.shopspiderpharm.com/servlet/Detail?no=26. I have ordered from them many times, and they do a great job. Just don't hatch out a lot of the flies at a time.. keep the pupae refrigerated. Only put a few, like no more than a half dozen, in the enclosure at a time after they have been well gutloaded. Gutloading them on good food and the small number you put in the cage at a time will help to keep them from gutloading themselves on chameleon poo before they are eaten. If you have the stomach for it, pull off a wing.. makes it easier for the little guys to catch them.

Other things mine seem to enjoy are firebrats. Not sure where you can get a starter culture of them right now.. I got mine a few years ago. Hatchling indian walking sticks are taken well, as are mantis hatchlings.

There is no way they could have escaped. Some might have been buried but the majority were gone..
