Killer almonds??!!

Almonds have cyanide in them Btw....but the roasting process is supposed to get rid of it.

After cleaning my roach tub, getting rid of the dead ones, and a few that were like, staggering around like drunk, I gave them fresh greens and some fruit and a chunk of bug burger.
Let them all chow down and give them a week or so to flush whatever residual 'poison' is in their gut.

I am certain it could only have been the almonds, I have eliminated all other possibilities.

This sort of thing bothers me on a deep level.

Lots of my friends and people I know in their 50's always seem to be sick, dont sleep well, have bowel trouble, lethargic, etc.

My parents were way more active, motivated, and healthy then our generation when they were our age.

Are we all being slowly poisioned to help lower the population??!!

Then, there are the giant pharmaceutical companies, pushing their benzodiazipnes and SSRI's using MD's to get us all
zoned out drug addicted, appathetic zombies!!

my two cents:

raw or dry roasted (not salted) almonds are fine as part of a gutload. Get organic if you can (this goes for almost everything to be ingested).

Im given to understand that the cyanide is really low - there's stuff like that naturally occurring in all sorts of things we and our pets eat. In moderation, its not significant. Indeed, moderation in all things

I favour a mixed dry gutload. I've noticed dubia (not hissers so much) more sensitive to gorging on a single item in quantity all at once - in my experience Bran and walnuts did a bunch of them in when they got an over abundance (accidental with the bran, on purpose with the nuts). Have experienced no die off with almond or walnuts when included in the mixed dry combo

Typical customer

Not criticizing, Walmart's target market is not the health conscious individual, that is why you are hard pressed to find any food that is not processed and full of junk. The fact that you are looking for organics means that you are not their typical customer. Their typical customer doesn't give a hoot about that.;)

We give a hoot about it: But do to the lowered standards of living we now face in this Country, unfortunately a lot of us can't afford to buy elsewhere. Regardless of how much we hate conglomerates like Walmart we have to eat. Business like Walmart are laughing at us, because the got us where they want us. Broke and desperate. I hope this doesn't seem to controversial sorry if it does. Just feeling a little jaded that I'm considered less of a person because I'm forced to shop where I can afford it.:(

Not judging. I wish Walmart would stock healthier food to compete with Natural Grocers and Whole Foods. Then this whole point would be moot. Consumers vote with their dollars and the trend is getting worse because of economic conditions.

Only the organic ones are safe as a gutload because by law they have to be steam pasteurized. All the others are gassed with jet fuel additive. The additive will kill your insects. No surprise since PPO is used as an insect fumigant.

I feel the same way, but I am still 100% health conscious and never shop at walmart, especially for food. Trust me and please don't take offense but there are ways around Walmart. For instance; I buy all my fruits, vegg, and grains at a local farmers market or farm and save a ton! For some "processed organic items" I still have to get some of that at the regular markets. Just a thought. I hope most people have a farmers market near them. We should as citizens take that stand against big companies forcing us to buy from them, and NOT buy their junk.

Sorry had to just throw that out there, back to the nuts…Could it have been a mold? Just wondering since mold i know is the culprit behind peanut allergies in humans. Are almonds susceptible to any? Hmmm...

Almonds are usually pasteurized with either a steam treatment or fumigation with toxic propylene oxide (PPO) gas. PPO is a jet fuel additive, a chemical so nasty that it was banned by both the National Hot Rod and American Motorcycle Racing Associations.

From wikipedia:

The United States Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of propylene oxide to pasteurize raw almonds beginning on September 1, 2007 in response to two incidents of contamination by Salmonella in commercial orchards, one incident occurring in Canada, and one incident in the United States. Pistachio nuts can also be subjected to propylene oxide to control Salmonella. It is a method approved by the FDA.[6][7]

Propylene oxide is a probable human carcinogen,[8] and listed as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen.

Oh god! I seriously eat a pound or more of almonds and pistachios a month...religiously. :(

I hear ya, it is very disappointing what "the man" is doing to our food in the guise of safety. Don't even get me started on Monsanto and the FDA. We see how important it is to only use the healthiest ingredients for our pets and what a difference it makes in their health. The same goes for humans.

Yes we have a farmers market, and we do buy from there when we can. The fruit and vegies are fresher, and tastier. However they are seasonal what do you do for the rest of the year. I truly would like to eat more health conscious, and it stinks that I feed my family food I wouldn't dream of giving my chams.:(

I hear you! Lol, my dogs have always eaten better than me  In the winter I still go to my farmers market (its open year round) but just have to trust the "organic" label or buy the produce from Mexico. Sometimes I just have to resort to our bigger grocery store.

How do you know the farmers market stuff is safe? How do you know what insecticides and fertilizers they use?
Even organic isn't necessarily what you think...

Another interesting Site...

And another....

I don't. Unless I grow the stuff myself I can't be certain all my veg/fruit is actually organic. I try to buy when I can but some of those labels don't mean squat. I just eat whole, fresh & raw and support local. As far as grains go, I always buy the same stuff from companies I know are for certain certified! Its all that processed junk thats killing us slowly. Thats the scary stuff  If I can't read the ingredients or if its a laundry list of who knows what from who knows where, then I won't buy it!

Maybe they were rancid.

No, they were fresh!
I intended to use them in my gut load. Never used them before.

Can anyone recommend a website that sells 'nontoxic' almonds and grains??

I have ordered stuff from a place called Barry Farms. Anyone else ever deal with them?

Unless you have acess to your own private lab, you are going to have to trust someone in the process of procurring something. Even with a lab, you will be using someone elses catalyst and enzyme agents, along with other chemicals. Unfortunately, but necessary for the human race to survive, you will have to trust another human being at some point, multiple times, every day. It is a real shame that greed, religious differences, racists, those unwilling to change after hearing a good argument to do so, etc... have brought us to this point in our existence. Remember in your daily travels, to respect every one's opinions and religion. Enjoy your life, so others around you can enjoy their life too. I truly am envious of those born in 30s-40s. If we don't start being able to trust one another, what will our kids and grandkids lives be like? P.S. if you do set up your own lab, I will definitely make the 90 minute trip up there, to make some crazy gutloads.

When we stop caring, trusting and sharing with others, is when our society as we know it, ends. :(

I was an analytical chemist in a lab run by a trade association.
I spent 26 years analyzing food products and packaged foods for trace elements, heavy metals, and pesticide reside.

There, I learned all about how science can be twisted to reflect any biased agenda, it was all politics !! So, after all that time, I quit!!

Now I work for the pharmaceutical industry as a scientific equipment engineer

Learned a lot of things most people would be shocked to hear

That's only the law in the USA :)
The organic ones are absolutely better, yes. the idea of your food being gassed is unpleasant, potentially unhealthy in the longer term absolutely yes.

But frankly I've used both organic and not organic, raw, blanched, dry roasted and even the cheap slivered almonds you find in bulk bin (probably from the USA and thus probably fumigated) as part of my gutloading for years without any issues. The bugs weren't harmed and neither were the chameleons (based on healthy breeding and general longevity). As the PPO process began quite a few years ago, I should have noticed something by now? Given that many people are unable to find or afford organic or steam pasteurized nuts, I dare say they to have used "regular" store-bought almonds from time to time. So I cannot agree that not using organic is an immediate death sentence for your cockroaches.

I do agree we should try to avoid propylene oxide if at all possible.

The almonds I buy are typically from Italy. They taste great. They don't use PPO. I get them in my local grocery store, but it may be easier to find truly organic almonds in Canada than the USA? but you can find online. for example http://bluemountainorganics.com/by-...w-nuts-and-seeds/almonds-italian-raw-lrf-8-oz and http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...tiveASIN=B0042B4220&linkCode=xm2&tag=dtx04-20
