Lamp timers

do you guys usually use a lamp timer that is specifically made for reptile lamps?
I heard you can use simple devices from Home Depot to have the lamp turn on and off at specific times. (Maybe like a Christmas light timer.)
Would i need to get one from a pet store for any reason, or would it essentially the same thing?
