LED UVB lighting

Hello all.
I recently went to a reptile shop here in chicago called Chicago reptile house looking for a few items i needed for my new chams enclosure. I was looking for a UVB fixture and a reptisun 5.0 bulb when the person working there told me about a new type of UVB lighting that just hit the market. Its a new LED light that replaces the 5.0 bulb.

Has any one used or even heard of this new lighting option and if so are you using it? Very skeptical about it considering I cant find any information about it anywhere.

You are right to be skeptical.

I have seen them advertising so called UV LEDs on eBay lately for reptiles.

Some day I am sure there will be an LED that offers BOTH full spectrum visible light AND the correct wavelengths of UV a&B light for our herps.

Or maybe there will be an LED unit that just provides UV....designed to be used in conjunction with some other full spectrum lighting product to give / add in the correct wavelengths of UV.

But that day has not come yet.

ANY LED product being claimed it is for PROPERLY lighting AND UV-ing herps (for right now anyway) SHOULD BE CONSIDERED HIGHLY SUSPECT.
If not a TOTAL OUTRIGHT SCAM. :eek::eek:

Here's an example of a "UV" emitting LED product that claims to be useful for Herpetology:

They say:

"Herpetology: Reptiles need long wave UV light to metabolize calcium for bone and egg production. In a reptile enclosure, you can now replace the typical fluorescent UV lamp (for calcium absorption ) with an LED UV light."

But their diodes only emit longer wave UV at 382 - 385. :confused::(:confused:

So this is totally hog wash. :mad:

Because here is the CORRECT wavelength needed for vit d synthesis:

"Vitamin D3 is made in the skin when 7-dehydrocholesterol reacts with ultraviolet light of UVB type at wavelengths between 270 and 300 nm, with peak synthesis occurring between 295 and 297 nm"

I think we will unfortunatly be seeing allot more of this "snake oil" being sold as the LED and UV craze gets hyped up more and more.

And I can only wonder and feel sorry for all the animals that will be harmed or even killed by such irresponsible people.

I've practically been in the process of making one of these , the technology is already there just no one has taken the time to do bit right lol actually would be 40-50$ bulb , or round 100-150 or less for a custom build, uva and uvb chips are available, 2-4 each of those, 4-6 each of 3500-6500k , 2 each of 460nm and 660nm and 6-10, 1000nm + infrared chips for spot heating... wppould be about 30watts for a con style bulb, maybe around 40-75watts for a custom build...any thought would love to hear

Be perfect lighting, perfect uva-uvb range ,good for plant growth, infrared and light heat would be enough to maintain tanks round 90+degrees , and Bulb life over three years... I'm actually quite surprised to not see any led aplications

well an all in one heating and light bulb with uv 1 to 2 would be enogh for one enclosure saxving round 75 -100watts of power and gixving your reptiles the xvery best spectrum, as any specrtum can be custom built to exact specifications only problem i haxve is with heating may just be better to use a infared ceramic lamp with the led lights spot lamp be about 75watts total for a 48xv48xv18 enclosure

awnsered that already dont people read lol, would cost about $40-60 a bulb and or $75-150 for a custom build and they will last about 3-5 years, wont shatter if dropped...
 
will use under a 100 watts tottal to power your tank also so youll see saxving within the first year in electricity and bulbs alone...
 
depends , leds dont lose light intesnity for oxver a year and only drops by a maxv of around 15% oxver the life of the led witch most last 5 + years closer to 10years, and far as profit goes depends , cost per bulb to produce around 15-30$ a peice and cold sell for $75-100$ a peice i supose , i mean thers marketing and what not too...
 
So is this all in one led light Patent pending,or still in the blue print and how can we know for sure the uvb out put only decrease 15%a year,has it been tested in the lab??so at 60 to 70 dollar amount profits each unit,where are u planning to sell these products? Petco?? Petsmart??? Online????
