leopard gecko parasites -.-

im pretty sure mars has parasites...his fecal/urate is clearish and runny, and smells something aweful. the worst part? theres no vets around that do herp fecal except the animal hospital which will charge me a couple hundred to do checkups and fecals on both my geckos not to mention the cost of medicine to treat it.....and i dont have that kind of money..at all..what can i do? :/

Leopard Geckos do get parasites. Mine has had pinworms before. I would keep calling vets until you find one that will do a fecal and see if he does have parasites and what kind so you can get the proper meds to treat. I'd branch out and call vets even a couple of towns away. Have you checked the Area By Area vets list?

yea, ive checked it, theres nothing for my area. but like i said, i really dont have a couple hundred dollars to spare, if not for the checkup, not for gas either :/ ugh...

i must say, the people on the gecko forums are far from friendly -.- yelling at me left and right for their condition and i JUST got them..im asking for help to make them better? sheesh...

Yeah that's why I don't post on that forum any more everyone thinks they are better then everyone.... I noticed your male looks very skinny which is due to the previous owners bad not yours. There poop could be that way from bad care there are a few things you came do to help but at some point you will have to get a fecal done and meds for them to get to 100% remember parasites can spread to all your animals ..... Set them up in a bear basic set up a moist hide made out of a plastic bowl turned upside down with a whole cut in the Side of it for them to get in and out with a damp paper towel in it paper towel on the bottem of there set up only and a D3 calcium bowl for them to lick up what they want and need unlike chameleons they can eat a lot of worms I feed mine a main diet of super worms put them in a bowl they can't get out of so they have clean feeders to eat only and try to get the weight up first then after they get there weight up a little you will have to get them to a vet they will not cure there selfs and will eventually die from parasite overload.. be very clean use throw away gloves and clean there set up every day and wash your hands evertime you mess with anything of theses.....

lol well, this reassures me after my brother and i have taken them out a few times already without gloves -.- they are currently in a 30 gallon with 2 moist hides, reptile carpet and everything else, but ill move them into the 15 gallon with paper towels like you said. ive been doing research all day on local vets that wont kill my bank account..but the odds are not looking good.

I’m not sure what it’s like in the US but here in Canada veterinarians can not prescribe medications without seeing the animal first and this is why the initial appointment is so expensive. They charge for the consult and any tests and subsequent medications. Once you have an established relationship with the doctor then poop samples can simply be dropped off for analysis and this does not require an appointment and is much cheaper.

If you already have a veterinarian for your horses and other pets, perhaps they will look at the fecal without that dreaded initial appointment. It's worth a call to find out.

my vets let us do fecal tests. but as trace said, wont prescribe the meds until theyve seen the animal.

however, after the initial exam, if you need more drugs for the same problem.. they can prescribe it without going back again..

Which is what i had to do for glacier. we did a fecal, he came back posi, we went in, got an exam, got meds.

3 weeks later, we did another fecalm came back posi, and they just gave me more meds.

I think the only thing Petco will do is take them back and give you a refund. But they will not give you any money for vet bills while they are in your care.

well, i called every vet in the area, including livestock vets, and again, the only one that will do it is the animal hospital and they want $100 per gecko for just the exam...which is required for the $30 fecal...

i understand that, but i dont trust the animal hospital. ive heard soo many horror stories of them prescribing super expensive meds that end up killing the animals anyways...

Well not to be a downer but it sounds like you do not have the funds or herp rehab time put inn to take on this you could always take them back to the store and try again later they will not cover any vet bills and more then likely when you take them back they will put them down or adopt them out to some other un knowing person..
