Ok I had a reptisun 5.0 uv bulb my male veiled started laying around with his eyes closed. Went through checklist of everything else making sure when my boyfriend fed he was giving calcium no d3 he was they get reptivite and calcium with d3 bi weekly. Went up to a 100w heat bulb because it's getting colder and my trailer is difficult to heat. The cage is 3ft reptibreeze the temp stays 75-80 degrees. Humidity not sure of because it's constantly fluctuating which is why I mist so regularly and multiple shower times a week. When I cut the uv off he has slowly started opening his eyes and moving around. I don't know what to do about the uv because I know the 2.0 is not enough for him. Please give me some ideas

I don't know why he is closing his eyes, but d3 should be given bi-monthly not bi-weekly. If he is laying around with his eyes closed during the day he is most likely sick and in need of a vet visit.

I may have worded it wrong I give it to him twice a month I'm half asleep. I turned his uv off and he's doing better

The odds of you finding one of those nasty first batch cfls that got recalled over 8 years ago are pretty slim. Many owner runs UV lights that are 20x as powerful as your 5.0, and the chams do just fine, and even at that output it just mimics shade on a sunny day.

Its possible its your 100watt basking light. Though a little rare, some halogens do not have the UVA coating on them( just the exposed quartz bulb), so the cham could be getting a 100 watt dose of uva at close range.

I've been thinking of swapping the veileds over to what I use on all of my Jackson's Wich is a hood that has a tiny bulb in it can think of the exact type but they have done great with it and I think this issue has just confirmed the swap over what I have will be okay to keep for emergency use. I do have the unfortunate luck of running into one of those bulbs though.

I'm planning on going back to the 75 watt bulb. I too wondered if that was the prob. Looking back this didn't start until last week when I had to change it.

From my understanding most people dust with plain calcium everyday and then d3 every week or two weeks alternating with multi v at a young age then as they get older maybe start to lengthen the time between dosage.

D3 every two weeks= D3 twice a month=bi-monthly :) It can be interpreted 2 ways o_O

For that size cage a 100w may be too much. I could be wrong, I'm not as experienced as some are on here. Your thermometer, is it really close to the basking spot to register that reading that you say you're getting? Because if your thermometer is say....... mid cage on the side and it's reading 75-80 degrees. That higher basking spot where he likely is chilling is more like 95-100 i'd bet money with a 100w unless your home is like a refrigerator. But if your thermometer is right near in the basking area you should be getting a good reading on the upper level of the cage. I like using a mid and upper thermometer, plus a temp gun is a good investment. You can snag them off amazon for cheap. I used a 100w bulb one time in a 24"x 24"x 48" and my upper level where he likes to bask was high 90's almost nearing 100 at mid day when my room is the warmest. It had to go!!! Now I just use two lamps with regular house bulbs.......I would bet that if the temp was the problem, he'd likely show signs of dehydration and possibly even some panting. That's just my two cents, I'm by no means as qualified as some on here. I hope you figure it out.
