Lighting

I would use the starter you have and use the bulb you have in the link. then make sure you put a reflector on it. I still dont trus the compact bulbs really.

Yeh Iv just ordered that and the slightly longer reflector thanks for your help

nothing, a long long time ago, cfls USED to cause eye problems. some of the older members don tuse them becuase of that, but i do, and have no problems.

Ahhh well it cost about the same either way . I just ordered the strip light and reflector so should be set, if not I can always just get the cfl bulb and use the hood :)

It'll be sat directly on it or clipped if needed, just ordered some dino fuel raptor aswell for him so hopefully Iv got everything I need

I didn't follow the replies too closely, but I'll throw in my 2 cents here....

- The hood you have is low quality, but will suffice.

-You need a 5.0 UVB light; you can use CFL. Just realize they have less light distribution....for your tiny cage, this is fine. But when you upgrade to a large 2x2x4' cage for your adult, it will not be very good anymore.

-Since you will likely need a larger bulb when you get a larger cage, I'd consider getting one now. I noticed above you linked a 15" bulb....one word of caution: ALL standardized lighting units come in 1,2,3,4' lengths. There are some "special" reptile units made in awkward 18 or 30" lengths, but finding bulbs for these is often tricky. I'd *HIGHLY* recommend getting a light unit in a standard foot-length (you can get them cheap at HD/walmart).

-You need a BASKING (heat) bulb. CFL do not generate heat and your light hood does not have a dome/heat reflector on it. You will still need a dome with an incandescent bulb in it (don't waste your money on the reptile shop bulbs, they are the same thing at 3-5x the price).

-Remember you must replace UVB bulbs every 6 months! They will still generate light and LOOK like they are working, but UVB is invisible; even if the bulb generates visible light it does not mean its making uvb.

-6500K is ideal for plant growth and if you have an extra spot for supplemental lighting, this is the color temp you should aim for (or as close as you can find)

Iv ordered everything I need now and not using the expo terra hood, I'm getting the 15" bulb with a 18" reflector to be placed on top with a 14cm dome reflector for the heat bulb
The UV bulb im getting is more because the mesh screen on top will filter out up to 50% or the UV light so the 5.0 wouldn't be enough

Thanks for chiming in though mate
