Howdy All,
We commonly use incandescent "basking" lights to produce daytime light and heat. Usually chameleon keepers are not concerned with creating a basking heat source that produces no light in the typical visible spectrum. Some chameleon keepers may need a "lightless" heat source for nighttime conditions that warrant additional heat due to their local climate conditions. In the past, this need has sometimes been filled with devices like the typical reptile "CHE" ceramic heat emitter. The CHE surface is dangerously hot and we have to be careful about the potential for burns. They are also relatively inefficient at delivering heat at a distance. Bob MacCargar at www.reptileuv.com is selling a product that he calls the 60 watt Mega-Ray Heat Projector http://www.reptileuv.com/megaray-hp-60-watt-heat-projector.php. It looks to be a very safe and effective product for delivering lightless heat. Its touchable surfaces don't get above 120F so there is little chance of burns, yet even at 20 inches away it is delivering, as Bob says, "great heat". I thought I'd share this information just in case someone is looking for nighttime heating solutions, especially for those keepers who actually have to live where this cold stuff called "snow" falls out of the sky .
