Locusts

We have just introduced our cham to locusts to add some variety, but i seem to be having trouble keeping them alive. Does anyone have any tips? They are kept in a plastic aquarium, and have things to hide under/climb on. We have bug grub/bran as the flooring, and they have lots of fresh fruit and veg and the gel for hydration. We do have a lid (with airholes in) on the top as they have a habit of climbing up the sides of the tank. Could this be why a lot of them are dying off before we get to use them?

Locusts.

Hi,

I feed my Panther chameleon locusts (Adult) and generally have no problems keeping them alive. 1 tub generally lasts 2 weeks.
I keep the locusts like you in a small plastic viv. Heated at room temp during the day. They are fed on fresh green food daily and I use kitchen towels as a substrate, I don't provide water as I asume water is extracted from the food they consume.

I hope that's of some use if not I suggest you look up locust husbandry on google, you're sure to get some advise from people better qualified than me.

Good luck.

Stewart.

i feed mine locust they seem fine to keep alive but as i treat my cham wax worms and butter worms he goes off his locust so harder to keep alive stubbern cham:mad:

Mine seem to stay alive ok. I leave them in the tubs that I buy them in, although sometimes a few die before Lily eats them. They get fed carrot, apple, cabbage, etc. They seem to eat loads when I first buy them! They really like Wild Rocket salad leaves. Also last summer I started to grow wheat grass for them which they really loved. I bought a packet of whole grain from a health food shop and sowed them in some compost in the cricket tubs. You have to soak the grain for a couple of days first before sowing it. To have an ongoing supply you have to plant a new crop every few days!

i had the same problem until i removed the bran that they come with and now they will last two weeks with gutloads of fresh fruit and veg and i do use bug gel for water.
I keep them in the tubs they come in and if there are quite a few in it i just seperate some into a different tub.

I am wondering if it is the addition of the lid, as before we were using it, they were all surviving. I think i will try some mesh on the top and see if that helps.
