Long Heating elements...

Is there such an animal as a heating tube? Like one that can be placed over the top of two cages?

when I had Gail, and she was sick, the vet told me to keep her warmer at night while she was sick - I used an under the tank heating pad on top covered with a cookie sheet- I did not know what to use , so that is what I came up with

That's not a bad idea, Cheryl! I wonder just how much warmth they would provide being up top?

I have seen flexible heating "rope" and heat tapes used for heating cages. There are some videos on YouTube.

Whatever you use, heat in the bottom will be effective, heat on the top will not heat down.;)

That was my concern, but then what is the point of those ceramic heat emitters that you put in a dome? I'm aware that heat rises...

Problem is....heat rises. Something like Flexwatt or heat cable may not provide heat that penetrates down very far. What about a small radiant heat panel? I use on on my bird aviary and it sits on the top. The heat producing part of the panel is aimed down.

it was like mid/upper 70s - keep in mind tho she did not climb - she just sat under it - or beside it - the cookie sheet was one of those kind that have like an air pocket in them- ( can ya tell I do not bake :p I found it you use like a reg one- it absorb more heat - the air pocket one worked better ) she would make her way to it every night and sleep there- I also would put it on the side too- this is a really bad pic - but you can see it on the side - and she would cuddle right up to it - and it was a heating pad- sorry- lol but I still used the cookie sheet and it kept her warm. you can get really long ones, and it can wrap the side and top - it was the only thing I came up with at 9 pm when the vet told me to do it- LOL but I still keep it handy for really cold nights for the panthers :)

I've seen those. How hot do they get?? No worries of thermal burn?

I have 2 of those- the ones I have - THEY GOT HOT ! you can hardly hold it in your hand - I wont use them except for under my crix - I put them on a dimmer - then you can use them - but if you just plug it in- it will burn you - this is what I have -Zoo Med Repti Heat Cable - but I never trusted it for the chams -

Can you control the temps? How wide are these? Thx

They are offered in a range of sizes and wattages. I don't know if they can be controlled by a thermostat or not as I don't use one. They may be simply "on" or "off", not dimmable. They don't get that hot. I'm not explaining it too well, but if you go to some animal supply places that carry them (herp supplies, aviary supplies, possibly mammal breeders) you could look into it more.

One link of a type I've used

Ceramic heat emitters concentrate heat in a semi triangular pattern in what ever direction you point them towards. The wattage needed just depends on the temp. you need and how far from the basking spot it will be. They work fantastic but it depends on what you are trying to do. Flex Watt heat tape can be used under or around an enclosure and might be suitable for warming a cage in the lower part! Just a thought.

All my main cages are heated with radiant heat panels hooked to a variable thermostats. The chameleons bask under the panels with no problems and have adapted well instead of using bulbs. It has now been 2yrs since the switch and only use bulbs on the babies. It helps save some coin in the long run. I have been using heat panels for about 13 years now with my Green Tree Pythons and still use my 1st one.

Could you please post a link or any information you might have on the heat panels as I'm very interested in them but have yet to research them!
Thanks in advance!!!
