Lost but Found Outside!!! Crazy!!!!

Chameleon Enthusiast
OMG! I have to tell you guys what happened today! Lenny is my other Sambava who I keep mostly in my larger outdoor cage. The cage door is messed up cause the bottom is rotting and does not meet properly and will open on its own and I put a chair infront for now(til I can get hubby to fix it :( )Was in the midst of feeding, and forgot the chair as ran to get phone(I know I am an idiot) So get a call from old friend and a couple of hours pass...go out to check chameleons to find cage door wide open and Lenny MIA!!! Honestly, he is a weirdo and likes to crawl around on the bottom alot so my first plan(as I am in tears freaking out) is check the ground and all the lower plants. My yard is a 1/4 acre and is fully landscaped front and back. There are places to get out of the yard as our fence pickets along the front are about 4 inches apart. So, I am being told by my son that I am never gonna find him and I think of others on here whose chams who have escaped and have never been seen again and I am SO upset. I see my neighbor Joe across the street and I yell to him to keep his eye out as one cham is missing. He comes over and starts looking around and I go back in the yard to continue the search. Not even ONE minute passed and I hear Joe "I FOUND HIM" I went running out front and on the side of my house there is a fence that borders my neighbors property and there he was rustling around in a plant that was low to the ground! He had seen the plant moving. Thing is the fence does not meet the ground and he could have easily walked under to meet his fate with my neighbors pit bull barking at us on the other side!!! I grabbed Lenny, kissed him on the lips(seriously!) and kissed my neighbor too!!! I still cannot believe how lucky I am. He walked over 100 feet and went under the fence. He could have been gone forever. Lucky he is a goofball and likes to stay low!!! Just got thorough talking to my hubby and he promises a new cage bottom this week! Thank God!!! I am soooooooooo greatful that my escape story had a happy ending!!!

I'm so glad you found him!!! What a relief... heart rate back to normal yet?? I thought I'd lost Spartacus, one of my tortoises, who escaped by magic from a pen on the lawn. I was panicking, looked everywhere, then my daughter heard munching and we found a fat, happy tortoise in the middle of our lettuce patch!

Believe it or not, I had my small tortoise escape under the same fence and tragically he chose to go under the fence where the pit bull I spoke of lives and was killed. The worst part of it all, was my neighbor found my torotise dead, threw it in the garbage and never told me even though I had signs posted and everything that he was lost. She even kept asking me if I had found him all the time. Long story how I found out, but he pretty much was killed the day he escaped. She said she wanted me to think he was still alive and thought it was better that way!!!

Phew! Now fix that enclosure!!! Very happy you found him safe ;).

I hear ya, I have been on my husband's back for weeks now about it. He always finds something else that HE finds more important to fix around the house, but now with this happening he assured me he would get on it. I don't think I will forget the chair again either!!! I have looked outside about 20 times since to make sure the door is closed. It has a latch, but if I latch it, then it creates a gap. You would have to see it to see what I am talking about. Bottom line is I am so glad to have my baby back!!!

I hate when stuff like that happens! I'm so glad you found him before the unthinkable happened!

It's never happened to me outside, but my male veiled is an escape artist. When I occasionally free range him he likes to roam (but it is unpredictable.) He once made it to the other side of my house with my dogs running around scared of him (they really don't like my chameleons. I'm not sure why.) I now have to diligently keep the door closed to the bathroom free range.

Thanks Kara!!!. Inside the house I would be worried too cause of our dog, but outside there is just the unknown. I still cannot believe I got him back. If you would see all the trees and plants and places he could go, I really felt overwhelmed and hopeless at first.

Close call! You were lucky to find him with so many hiding places.
Glad to hear Lenny is home safe.

Goodness gracious! That is a heartstopper of a story. Glad it has a happy ending. (That really is awful about your neighbor and tortoise though.) But hooray for Joe - the chameleon finder! Although it doesn't surprise me Lenny likes to wander on the ground. My cham likes to do that to.

I'm so glad this story has a happy ending. My favorite part was imagining you kissing Lenny then turning to your neighbor who just saw you smooching on a chameleon - it made me giggle a little :D

lol! I did not attempt to kiss my neighbor on the lips as he saw me kiss my chameleon and he looked at me kinda weird!!!

yes, my tortoise was a real sweetie and I was devastated when I found out. It was 6 months later and up until that day I was constantly looking for him still. Everytime I saw a rock or something in the road my heart stopped. I don't know what made my neighbor look where he did, but he was in the right place when he was rustling the bush around and that was what he caught his attention. You should have seen the look on his face when I kissed my chameleon! ha Priceless!!!!

Carol,,, I love happy endings!!!!!!!!!! I'm sooooo glad that there was one for you and Lenny!!!!!!!!!

Now,,,, Tell your husband to "get on it" !!!!!!! ;)

Wow, that would be even worse because there is that constant worry and no sense of closure. How sad, but very glad this story turned out with a great ending!

I know, I asked her if her dog got hit by a car and died would she want someone to dispose of it or would she want to know about it so she was left forever wondering. Her husband ended up cheating on her and I have to say I was not too upset about it...hehe:D

Hahaha...karma is a bitch! Glad she got what was coming to her.

On a happy note, I am SO VERY GLAD you found Lenny! What a horrifying story...I've had that heartstopping fear before when you realise you are missing someone very dear to your heart. It is terrifying! Someone was looking out for you both today and your neighbor helped facilitate the happy ending. Glad everyone is safe!

ps: I kiss my chams all the time and my hubby thinks I'm a weirdo too!!

a couple months ago one of our baby crested geckos got out of his terrarium, we too found him/her within 5 minutes, but he had been out all day and had only gone about 4 feet from the tank!!! crazy scary though!!!

glad you found him

Glad he was found carol!

That one neighbor that doesnt know you well...I can imagine you scurrying around the yard frantically going from bush to bush and tree to tree...Calling out to him like Lasie. LENNY, HERE BOY, LENNY! Then those neighbors saying "Kids see thats why we dont talk to her".
