Lucy my veiled chameleon

jackie stone

New Member
She is just over a year old,has laid eggs twice,at the moment she is under her basking light and has one eye closed and the other open, this happened yesterday so we got her to drink from her dripper and it didnt make any difference,we checked that her temps were fine, when we put our hand in her enclosure she wanted to climb all over us and then her eye was then open.
Now again this afternoon she is doing the same thing, she does look like she will lay eggs soon as she has the green dots on her body, but I dont know what to make of her eye,it doesnt look swollen or sore and one minute it is open and normal then it is shut again:confused::confused:
Any advice is most welcome thank you, will get her photo up in a mo thanks Jackie

What is the humidity like in her cage? You may need to fill out the help sheet to give more Info:

I also noticed that you said she is just over a year old and had already laid 2 clutches of eggs, Unfertilized I take it? Just in case you didn't know that can be hard on your girl and posssibly reduce the length of her life. There are steps in your husbandry that can help reduce her chances of having infertile clutches such as lowering her temps and reducing feeders, here is a good link with a bit of info on that subject.

Hi Jackie. It's possible she may have something stuck in her eye such as a piece of shed. Try misting her to encourage her to clean the eye for herself. Has she been rubbing it at all?

No she hasnt been rubbing it,when she sees me there misting the cage she will open her eye,it doesnt look sore but sunken, the other eye is fine,I thought she was going to lay infertile eggs again as last time it was around February and she has got larger,I am trying to put a picture on here as she is quite large and has dark spots on her,she always has a laying bin in her cage full of sand but she hasnt been near it,the room is nice and quiet and she looks ok except for this sunken eye
How are your chams?

How many eggs did she lay the first two times?? She looks huge and if the clutches are over 2 dozen then IMHO you need to slow her down. If you are overfeeding her by much you could end up with an eggbound chameleon. Shes' beautiful and it would be a shame to lose her. You are right about it being time for her to lay more if the last clutch was in Feb.

Re: the eye...what brand and type (spiral, tube, compact, etc.) of UVB light are you using and have you switched brands or bulbs lately?

she laid 56 eggs the last time, end of February,I am worried that she will continue to have large clutches,I have cut down on her food gradually, her eye is open and normal today :)

The time to cut the food down IMHO is not when she is already producing the eggs. After a female veile lays her eggs, I feed her well for a couple of days and then cut her back with the hope that she will not grow and ovulate too many follicles so she will have a smaller clutch of eggs. I have had veiled females live to be 6 or 7 years of age and never lay one egg.

I'm sure its not just the food being cut back that stops the production but the whole way I keep them....temperature, supplements, gutload, etc.

Good luck with her!
