Macaw info

Lots of great advice here! Having grown up around big birds and having worked in a pet store and cared for and met quite a few that way I can say most of the advice here is spot on.

I wanted to add one more thing from personal experience. Because these birds are so intelligent judging temperament by species can be a loose guide at best. These animals are very much individuals with personalities as varied as any group of people. It is important to get to know the exact bird you are considering and as was mentioned earlier let the bird choose you.

They will very often decide they like an individual and make a great companion. Choosing a big bird is more like choosing a life long friend than it is like choosing a pet. Your husbandry and animal care skills will come second to personality compatibility. I know that sounds insane but it is what I've observed and experienced.

Hi, .. i know its the threads died of long time ago, but heres my inut for anyones interstted.

my parrots: blue and gold macaw, african grey, yellow crested cockatoo, black cap lorry.

birds are amazing pets and bonds with the owner. they would know and favor owners, eg, my blck cap only lets me hold her .. other member of the family will get nipped !.

ont thign is for sure ... they ARE EXTREMLY LOUD, and can be messy (specially lorries that eat wet food). be aware that my hands look like my BD back as i get scratches all the time.

but other than that .. they are vvveryy rewarding and lovable pets. moderate maintnence, easily trainable.
