I went to go feed my cham some crickets, and found tons of maggots underneath the egg carton! I have no idea how long they have been there, can they make him sick? Should i get him tested for parasites?

It probably wouldn't hurt to get him tested.

I don't think maggots and parasites would be in the same category. Most likely the maggots are from dead feeders or food either in your bin or your supplier's.

So it probably wont hurt him? There was defenintly atleast 50 in there

Maggots are unlikely, unless there were rotting, dead feeders or food, which would smell. You may be seeing dermestid beetle larvae or something else. I'd not worry, but I would confirm what you are seeing and if maggots are what you saw, then dispose of the feeder bin contents, clean, and start over.

It was definently maggots, I trashed my entire cricket bin, i didnt look under the egg carton for a long time.. There were tons of rotting dead crickets covered in maggots, ive also got a video if you want it..

I had the same problem... all I did is start over and this time put the bin in my garage cabnit. I think if the crickets are inside, it won't happen I think, but I didn't want crickets chirping all nite in my house.

It won't happen anywhere if you keep your cricket bin clean. The flies lay their eggs on the dead crickets, the maggots eat the dead crickets when they hatch. Keep the dead crickets cleaned up and you won't have maggots, not to mention the awful smell of dead cricket carcasses!

I find that if I buy 2 week old banded crickets they live a loooong time. 1000 will last me a month with very little die off. I gut load with bug burger. No smell either and I don't think they're all that noisy.
