Male Digging

Thanks for everyone's help with this. I have moved the lamp further away to see if that helps with the heat and how his behavior changes. I will do my best to make sure everything is "top shape" and "tickety boo." Will you updated on this thread. thanks again.

okay you have a few things wronge....turn off that 60 watt red light...i doubt your house drops below 55 degrees at night...the mercury vapor bulbs arnt the best for chams since they need to escape the uvb sometimes.... so here are some changes you need.

Please post pics of his set up too!

buy a repti sun 5.0 and a the fixtures are at any hardware store for 10 bucks...buy a clamp light fixture and put a soft white house bulb in there 60 watts....you want your basking spot no higher then 88 degrees....mesure this with a digital thermomometer only... do you have subsrtate?

and the cage is 24 inches long (2 ft) 26 inches tall (2 ft 2 inches) and 12 inched width (1 ft)... do you really think that is too small? He is only 4-5 months old. when he starts to get bigger I will definitely upgrade. How big should it be for cham his size?

This cage is too short for all the heat you are generating with the lighting you are using.

You don't need a night time heat lamp. If your temps drop below 55* F then use a heat coil... not a lamp... no matter the color.

The 100w heat/uv lamp is a MV lamp? That is a lot of output for such a short cage. I would change over to a linear 5.0 UVB lamp from ZooMed. Then use your 60w heat lamp along side the UVB lamp. Operate both lamps 12 hours on and 12 hours off. You can run the lights for less time in the winter to simulate the shortening of daytime light.

I think your cham is digging to get away from the heat.

I agree... you are providing him with wayyy to much heat.
He's digging in the soil to cool down.
From my experience, with a basking temp of 90 F, a veiled chameleon can reach a body temp well over 100 F (Measurement using a tempgun).

I am guessing since you are using analog thermometer, the temp is much hotter than what it look.
the analog thermometer is kinda bad in measuring temp.

getting a super female is possible but very unlikely.
Over heating is the most likely scenario.

Any other reason why a male would dig?
