Mantis dinner

Poor little Mantis,,what a way to wake up! Have a giant tongue hit you like a Mac truck first thing in the morning. You can almost hear the burp in the last photo. :p

Aw, it's almost sad to see such a nice mantis be eaten.. But I love parsonii pictures so... it evens out.

Great pictures Steve, your girl is stunning, my guys love these too, there fav at the moment is huge fruit beetle grubs :)

Is it practical to raise these from an egg case?

If you buy them as adults, should they be gut loaded; if so, with what?

Don't know how practical it is , but at any given time I have at lease a hundred growing up in cages and cups. I feed the nymphs fruit flies, and as they grow add size appropriate crickets and house flies. The mantis in the picture is , or was a good four inches.

Insects with sharp spikes on their legs such as mantids, roaches, grasshoppers, katydids etc., be risky with Parson's high chances of mouth infections?

I realize that these guys eat bigger feeders and I am sure they scarf down even bigger things in the wild... but why risk it?

Have you Parsons keepers ever fed your Parsons insects with even sharper spikes? Like larger stick insects?

If you could see the physiological reaction shown by placing a mantids, grasshopper, katydid, walkingstick, in for them, you might know why. I have never see a faster moving (chameleon) parsonii, than one that catches a glimpse of a mantis or walkingstick. I can be ten feet away, and they come running towards the prey.
As time go's by, I have also observed a distinct pattern of more active feeding in the morning hours before nine, and in the hours before dusk with the parsonii. At times when one might think, when these insects might be just becoming active or looking for a place to bed down, and vise verse.

Below is a picture of a girl doing a dash from one side of the cage (7 feet) to the otherside to get a walkingstick. I really need to get into video! ;)

That mantis picture rocks! Not a lot of choice pics of mantids on the defense. Love the caption too, put the lid back on, killer laughs!

Poor little mantis :( he didn't have a chance. Beautiful parsons tho. Is this the one you had at the meeting at Dr. Greeks?

No, that big girl was on the menu weeks ago. I do have a story about that one though. As I got her out of the cup to feed, she bit me right in the thin webbing of skin between my thumb and index finger. I thought for sure I'd have mantis bite marks or blood drawn. But think she just pinched the skin.
My pain threshold was high that day, and I bearly flinched as the endorphins kicked in.

Here's a picture of one of the little guy getting some apple juice.

Thanks for the info! I kinda feel bad about using the praying mantis' as feeders because i find them quite interesting; but i could justify it if i raised as many as a casing will hatch to a fair size, kept a practical amount as feeders and released the rest in my yard. Maybe if they winter over(?), i'll have some wild caught mantis this time next year. . . maybe not.
Either way, many have said that chams love these guys!!
