Mantis

Hello! I'm thinking of getting some mantises or however you say it plurally for my little guy, and I am thinking of breeding some mantises to have some to raise for him and for baby chameleons when I get there. What species are good for them, and safe, easy to breed, etc. @nick barta

No species of mantids are going to be easy to breed. They take up a lot of room and require a lot of work. Unless you like keeping mantids themselves I would avoid them. Most communal species of mantids, chams won't touch.

If you live where the Chinese mantis lives you can collect the eggs in the winter and hatch as needed. Or you can buy them tor like $6... probably cheaper than raising them.

Don't buy eggs until January or you may get last winters eggs.

Thank you for the info! Yeah, I understand that they are hard to breed and take room, but I really love mantids, they are just neat. Thanks for showing me the proper plural for mantis! ;)

My preferred species for feeders are semi communal but almost impossible to find. I have been searching for them for ages

If you're doing it for the fun than go for it. I read Chinese are the easiest to keep but are very cannibalistic. Below is a link to a decent cage. Idk if the size is right for breeding but i use them for other bugs. They are a little cheaper on eBay if you want to wait a month but $14 is good enough for me.

I heard that you should separate the babies because of cannibalism too. Cannibalism kind of creeps me out...

The nymphs should be seperated at least after their first molt to avoid as little cannibalism as possible. To stop cannibalism of the entire ooth until then you will likely need to feed twice as much.
