mealworms

when you feed your chameleon mealworms do you put them in a cup? my flapneck is eating crickets fine but if i wanted to feed him mealworms i cant imagine he would find them unless they were in a cup. but then again i dont know if he would eat out of a cup..any suggestions?

Mealworms aren't very good for your cham. They don't have much in the way of nutrition and their hard exoskeleton can lead to bowel impaction.

But, superworms and other wormy type things can go in a cup. There's quite a few members that use a feeder cup. Just make sure it's opaque. If it's clear, your cham may frustrate itself striking the outside of the cup and not knowing why he isn't catching anything.

Can we dust the mealies to make them better for the chams? I hate to just waste $40 plus storage tubs etc. on the 1,000 mealies I ordered. Plus I really don't wanna do crickets.

What is the age of your chameleon?
You could always trade them in for supers.(toss the mealies)
Also roaches could be an option too.

i put the supers on the screen and let them hang on for their life. sometimes they fall but i put them up on the screen of death in no time. this way i can get my cham to move from one spot to the other instead of sitting. he is too lazy.

Meal worms don't cut it . I know you have a lot but they have nothing to offer your chameleon. You should consider a better feeder like roaches or silks and superworms. To many soft body insects isn't good either they need more crunch in there diet.

Mealworms are fine in moderation. BAd for a staple, but good in moderation - you rally can't go wrong with greater variety. So while superworms are much better than mealworms by themselves, mealworms AND superworms are better. A bit of chitin here and there is good for the chameleons - too much soft stuff can lead to impaction as well. I fed my melleri a ton of mealworm beetles when he was small - his favorite food. You couldn't tell the different in his stool (from eating hard beetles or silkworms)without a close look - they digest the chitin to a degree.

thanks for the advice..yea its only for moderation feeding...mainly he gets crickets but I will try the superworms next time as well...i want to shy away from roaches until he gets big...I HATE roaches

You could always trade them in for supers.(toss the mealies) dang. I spent alot of time reading on how to breed them.
Also roaches could be an option too. I guess I'm gonna be forced to go roaches or crickets huh?...o well whatever is best!!
