Hello,

I am new here and a just got my very first chameleon. He's a Grier Panther that I got from Mike from FLCham. I have a bunch of questiongs:

He is about 4 or 5 inches long and I was wondering what the best food for him is? Crickets? Waxworms? Bloodworms? Hornworms?

I coat everything with calcium. How often should I use a multivitamin?

How do I tell when he is hungry?

How do I get him to warm up to me?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Chameleons will warm up to you gradually, or not. Some will be grumpy their whole lives but for the most part if you just do not mess with them when they are angry, keep their humidity and temps doing well and feed them right they should be just fine to handle every once in a while. For feeding, use a basis or a staple insect like crickets or dubia roaches. I suggest Dubia roaches because it is easy to set up your own colony and then you do not have to spend money on them, however, crickets can be used as well they are just expensive to buy every week and die easier. Mix in other insects when you get the chance, hornworms are a good one but try to avoid mealworms because they do not provide much nutritional value. He will not always be hungry but you can feed him daily. You can either free roam the feeders but this generally only works best with crickets, put them in a cup, or hand feed him. Also, do not feed him insects that are larger than he is across, from eye to eye or else there can be problems. Hope that helps a little, if you have any other questions or want me to explain why different methods of feeding etc. are different/pros and cons let me know! I have 5 chameleons now so I am happy to help.

Check out the care sheet I linked for you.

Supplementation is detailed in there. You should be using plain calcium (Phosphorous- free) at nearly every feeding, Calcium with D3 twice per month (once every two weeks) and a multivitamin twice per month alternating with the D3. This is a very general supplementation schedule that many keeper use successfully.

Gutloading your feeders is just as important. I would avoid the fluckers brand gutloads since they are not as nutritious as fresh veggies. This link has a list of good gutload veggies you can feed your feeder insects: https://www.chameleonforums.com/care/food/

Thank you! I was using Flukers, so maybe I should stay away from that.
