Chameleon Info:
  • Your Chameleon - Veild, male, bought from local Pet Supplies Plus On 10/06/17
  • Handling - I have only handled him 3 times. He is a bit skittish not afraid but weary.
  • Feeding - I feed him Dubia roaches, small crickets as regular diet w/ calcium added each feeding. Cal w/ D3 twice so far every other Sunday. Also herpivite every other Monday. BSFL, and butterworms occasionally. I gut load w/ kale, carrot, butternut squash, and sweet potatoes.
  • Supplements - Not sure of the brand as I am at work and cannot check right now. But I have cal with and with out D3, herpivite is what the container says for vitamins.
  • Watering - Currently only mist 3 times a day for 2-3 minutes. I have only seen him drink once. He was claiming on the top on the cage screen burying his head in the drops. Super cute.
  • Fecal Description - Never been tested. His poop looks good judging from the poop 101 thread. Urate is white to a slight off white. Poop and urates do not appear to be “slimey” at all.
  • History - Nothing I can think to add here. I have only had him for three weeks.

Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - Cage is screen on the top and three sides. Cage door is clear plastic. Measure 18x18x36”
  • Lighting - Again idk brands but 100w incandescent heat bulb for reptiles, and a 5.0 CFL UVB lights on at 8am and off at 8pm
  • Temperature - Using one of those gauges that stick to the cage. Ik they are not great but I am very VERY low on funds at this point in time. Better than nothing I say. Temps in basking area stay about 80-85. Floor is about 70-75, and night temps drop to roughly 60-65.
  • Humidity - Ranges from 55-70 from misting, again using the crappy dual gauges (temp and humidity)
  • Plants - 1 Pothos plant and a couple fake leafy branches, several sticks horizontal and vertically placed.
  • Placement - Cage is located next to my PC desk. No fans or vents. It is kinda a high traffic area but it’s just me and my wife. Top of cage is about 6’ from the floor.
  • Location - I am located in central New York, USA.

Current Problem - Well I noticed 2 days ago that he tends to keep one eye closed. It doesn’t appear to be swollen or sunk in just keeps it closed. He doesn’t seem to mind opening it. When he does open it, it’s because he senses movement (feeders, me when I mist, or walk by, if his cage moves from bumping my desk, etc.) When he does open it, it appears to be completely normal looking. No crustiest or mucus. Looks normal. Thanks ahead of time.

Avoid misting it in the eyes but you might need to most it longer so it can clean itself

Welcome to the forums. It could be the lights are bothering his eye but usually they bother both eyes. It would be nice if you knew what kind of lights you have. You could try giving him some long warm mistings to wash out his eye incase he has something in it.

When’s the last time you cleaned the plastic plants and the live pothos ivy plant?
Embarrassingly I only cleaned the Pothos. That's was when I bought it. The fake leaves have never been cleaned. I will also mist longer but what to o do with the water that accumulates at the bottom? In the past three weeks I have grow quite fond of the little fella. He has become quite part of my feeling if that makes sense. I care about him is what I'm saying. I really wish I could afford a vet right now. At least for a care check. Whatever advice I get I'll follow.
Is tap water ok because that is what I have been using.

The brand of both lights is Zilla and added a pic of recent poop

As Jann said...it would be good to know more about the lights. What brand is the UVB? Is it long linear it compact? Is the incandescent light giving off white light?

You could set up a dripper. All you need is a tall deli cup with a tiny hole in the bottom so it drips at the rate of one or two drips per second.

I would set a hand mister on a very fine misty spray setting and gently mist his eyes being careful not to spray water in its mouth.

There’s one of your problems right there Tap water!
Floride and chorlrine is in tap water is harmful not only the chameleon but for you as well! If you use tap water use a water treatment a must! It’s even good to use it in bottled water because it’s in the bottled water the only two that I know of that doesn’t is Fiji and smart water and that’s to expensive for as much as you mist. Get an inexpensive plastic container for the excess water. And at least once every week disenfect the entire enclosure a must it is! What will happen if you don’t the feeders will eat the chameleons feces and then when it eat them you have problems and that’s the easiest way for the chameleon to die. And that is how mites and everything else comes along with it and you don’t want your chameleon getting pink eye and yes the can get pink eye they rub their eyes on stuff to clean them.

Both lights are Zilla brand. The UVB bulb is a CFL (compact flourecent, spiral bulb) the color is your typical whitish red spectrum incandescent bulb I added a pic. You can see Milo dead center at the top. And you can see a poop pic above. Also I would like to thank you all so much. Please what is the best way to clean with limited stress?

Some of the CFLs have been known to cause eye problems. You can try turning it off for a day or two to see if the chameleon keeps the eye open...but don't donut for too many days. I've always used the Repti-sun 5.0 long linear tube UVB light and never had any eye problems. That doesn't mean it's the only possibility though.

Can I get away with boiling the water? What other forms are there for water treatment? I have planned to buy a fixture and linear tube bulb for him. Likely take me a week or two. Funds are allocated elsewhere for the time being (child support is raping me, court is still in session). Once the dust settles finances will change.

I don’t know what the municipal water company adds. But I’m wondering if boiling the water would be helpful? His eating habits haven’t seemed to change, and he is still drinking. He is fairly active as well.

I just got two females one kept one eye closed alot. I read vitamin A deficiency .I used fish oil but vitamin A is available . It has helped I also got eye gel from horse sense. Put a drop of vitamin a
cricket for a week to help the a deficiency or on a q tip let it bite down on it and that is enough you only need 1\20th of a drop.the fauna has lots of info and people that know about these problems.

I read that as well while searching out a remedy. I bought vitamin A as a gel cap “retinol palimate” spell check. I poke a whole in a gel cap and squeeze a drop onto a qtip. Then I touch the back of a roach. What I’m wondering is how many times a day should I do this, and for how long. I have also added a stripper to go with the misting

Hydrate him much more, If you have a dripper or something like that, use that and drip the water down, a little bit lower that his basking location. Make sure it is dripping on plants. But if you don't have a dripper, mist for at least 5 minutes, mist the cage until it is drenched and dripping water every where, but if there is a wall behind your cage, You may want to be careful about the mist. All i want to say is, He needs to be more hydrated. Also, one question, Is he comfortable with you being around him, or does he hide behind branches when your around, if he doesn't, wait around and watch him to see if he goes to the source of the dripping, if he does, he needs water, just try and get him as much water as possible.

I did acquire a dripper and it does drip on the pothos right near the basking area. I also have increased my misting a good amount. I mist with a fine mist for 5 minutes, and yes I have painted drywall behind his cage. I will work on a remedy for that. Milo is definately not comfortable with me. He doesn’t run away when it’s feeding time, but when the mister comes out he takes off. He doesn’t hiss or anything and he stays green for the most part. I have gotten him to crawl on me twice. Honestly if I can nip this in the butt I’m confident him n I will be ok. Fact is the little sucker stole my heart.
