Well-you can have them probed-somewhat dangerous and very stressful, or you can have them DNA sexed-expensive, or you can wait to see boy parts or wait for them to lay eggs. So yes, it is that hard to tell the sex of them.

Most people just put some together and see what happens. They watch behaviors, and possible mating.

I just saw an ad for some farm raised juvies. They were in the 4-6" range. You'd have to wait a yr or so to determine their sex though.
