Misting systems and purified water

I have been running my exoterra monsoon for a few months now, 4 nozzles no problems works great. However I am using distilled or purified water. I started off with a zero water filter, not cost effective $30 for filter filter 30 gallons = $1 a gallon. distilled or purified water = $1 a gallon, I use 1 gallon a day, thats $365 a year , unacceptable. So here is the question. How long will this unit last on tap water ? I live in FL. What units out there are known to run fine on tap water ? I need to eliminate this expense. Or another approach How can I filter water cheaply ? What goes wrong using tap water clogged nozzles ? can they be unclogged with something like clr ?

I don't really have an answer to your question -- and I would love to know how people are handling the water supply for misting myself.

I can tell you that using tap water might not be a great idea, depending on what's in it. In Cincinnati we have fluoride and chlorine in our tap water, which I can't imagine is very healthy for chameleons.

Aside from that, your unit could begin to scale from the minerals in your water. You can typically clean that by soaking affected pieces in vinegar, just don't spray your chams with the mister unless you're 100% sure the vinegar is out!

I'm considering getting a GE Reverse Osmosis filter to fill up the 5 gallon jugs of water I've been buying from Home Depot...

I use purified water from my fridge now a days and it works well. I don't have a mister but my best friend uses purified also for her monsoon and has been for awhile without any problems so that may help you

I use bottled water. I have my mist king using a 5 gallon bottled water jug. I pay .75 cents for 5 gallons. No problems.

I do not use tap water simply because there may be more potential risk with fluoride and chlorine against my chams health, and contaminants/particles which will clog my mister heads eventually.

You do not want to use regular water is it will eventually wreck your system. here is by far the best solution. Buy a RO/DI system. That is what I did and I tell you it is the best purchase I have done in a long time. The good thing is you will never have to run to the store and get Distilled water again. Here is the one I got. The good thing about this one is you tie it into your misting system resivour and once it fills it up it automatically turns off always leaving you will a full bucket of clean water perfect for your misting/fogger system. I absolutely love mine and is my favorite part of my setup right along with my misting system. Here is the link. It was recommended to me by another member on here Wykd. http://www.purelyh2o.com/index.php/...age.tpl&product_id=65&category_id=80&vmcchk=1

I now never have to worry about filling up bucket with distilled water.

Oh and the filters last 6 months or more on this system.
