my daughters cam is sitting on his log basking with his mouth wide open. This is not what he normally does - any suggestions please?

thanks

What is the basking temp? Chams do that when they are hot. A good temp is 85 degrees. If it is more then that you need either a lower W bulb, or maybe your room temp is warm enough without a basking bulb.

We have this combined bulb;

The Exo Terra Solar Glo Sun Simulating Lamp is the solution to one of the most important aspects of keeping reptiles and amphibians, providing the benefits of natural sunlight. The proper balance of ultraviolet light (including UVA and UVB), visual light and infrared light (heat) in one easy-to-install bulb makes the Exo Terra Solar Glo the choice of professional breeders. The Solar Glo is a full spectrum light with carefully tuned peaks to ensure appetite, activity, brilliant colours, and calcium absorption through Vitamin D3 production, and above all to prevent metabolic bone disease

The basking temp is 80F

My cham was doing the same thing. Do you see any mucous in the mouth or saliva? If so get your cham to a veterinarian and start an antibiotic. I lost an absolutely amazing male due to an upper respiratory infection that went undetected until it was too late. He kept his mouth open on occassion but otherwise seemed fine. Clear eyes and all. Good luck.

Are you sure about that basking temp? What are you using to measure the temperature?
You don't mention what wattage bulb you have, but I know that the SolarGlo only comes in 125W and 160W options. Both of those are pretty powerful bulbs. Also the SolarGlo is a mercury vapour bulb, which is quite an intense light to use for most chams.
It could be very likely that the cham is getting too hot - they open their mouths and gape when they're overheating - but I would expect that at temps higher than 80F.

How old is your cham?

In order for anyone to be able to help you properly, you're going to need to provide the details of your setup to us.
Use this link as a guide - try to fill out as many of the details as possible: https://www.chameleonforums.com/how-ask-help-66/. Also post pictures if you can!
