I have a wild-caught graceful chameleon that I purchased from a reptile expo about a year ago. I've been battling what I think might be an infection on her lower jaw ever since I got her. I've taken her to a reptile vet quite a few times in the past, and he prescribed something called Baxtril (my spelling might be off) that I had to give her orally which seemed to help for a bit. When I got her, the lower half of her mouth had a slight purple discoloration. Once I treated her with the medicine, the purple spot "fell" off, and left a small gap that seemed to be filling with granulated tissue. It healed fast, and then went back to being purple. Now, her mouth is far worse. It is protruding out, and almost black in appearance. She has refused food for four days now and I haven't seen her drink. I have no idea what to do. I plan on taking her back to the vet this week to get it looked it, but I'm afraid that he'll just give me the same medication that will only temporarily heal it. I've posted some pictures to show how bad it has progressed. Any ideas? What can I do?
Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Graceful, Female, Approx. 3-4 years old, She's been in my care for little over a year now.
Handling - About once every two weeks.
Feeding - She eats crickets, superworms, giant mealworms, and occasionally dubia roaches. I feed her every other day, and gut load with Jurassic cricket pellets and green vitamin water cubes.
Supplements - I dust my crickets/worms once a week with Sticky Tounge Farm's Miner-all supplement for indoor.
Watering - I mist twice daily with a hand mister, and also run a reptifoger on and off throughout the day. I have a dripper for her as well. I see her drink all the time, but lately not so much.
Fecal Description - white and brown in color. Consistency goes back and forth from soft to hard. Yes, she has been tested and is parasite free.
History - She is wild caught and was in pretty rough shape when I got her with two other chameleons from a reptile expo. She was my only survivor out of the bunch. The others died of liver failure and MBD that was so serious my vet was surprised they lived so long after I purchased them. She is aggressive towards everyone except for me.
Cage Info:
Cage Type - Reptibreeze open air screen cage, 16x16x30
Lighting -150W Exoterra day bulb along with a UVB bulb from reptisun. She has a 12 hour cycle. Day lights turn on at 10am and turn off at 10pm.
Temperature - During the day the cage floor is around 70-75F and basking spot is around 85F. The lowest overnight temp is 65-68F. I measure the temperature daily with an infrared thermometer.
Humidity - Humidity is around 60-70% during the day. I place a towel around one side of the cage to help keep the humidity up for about 3 hours of the day.
Plants - Artificial.
Placement - The cage is about 4ft off the floor in my reptile room. I have her located in a spot where there is no way for her to see the other reptiles so she doesn't stress out. I have a ceiling fan that is always on low in the room to provide enough ventilation for her.
Location - Michigan.
