Mulberry

Dandelion leaves, grape vine leaves, bramble, other tree leaves, thin shaved carrot,....

If you are raising them from egg, or you desire moths for breeding, I've found its best to have mulberry leaves (or mulberry based product) form 50% of the larva diet.

If you buy the chow as powder, then only make up as much as you need for a week, you'll avoid having anything go bad. I make some every other day or so since I boil water every day - just put a few spoons of poweder chow in a bowl, add some boiling water, stir, allow to cool, use. repeat as necessary.

Well i put a dandelion leaf in with them and they are eating it like crazy. At least now i can sustain them untill i find some mulberry! Thanks :D

Just a quick Q...

Its safe for chams to eat the silks after they have been eating dandelions right?

absolutely. I regularily use dandelion as part of my gutload (crickets, roaches, silkworms, superworms...).

If you can get grape vine leaves for your silkworms, try those too. They are high in calcium.

Cool thanks for that info. can i use citrus or apple leaves?

Ok well I'm glad the dandelions are good for my Cham also :) I just got done unloading a 9ft weeping mulberry so I guess my silkworms are good to go.

last week we just bought an entire orchard for our large back yard in Florida that will surround the outdoor cham enclosure that we're building. 4 different kinds of mangos, papaya, fig, blueberries, peaches, nectarines, cherries, pineapple, dragonfruit, mulberry, yellow bamboo, plumeria and i can't even remember what else. i've never worked with silkies at all and was hoping to, but this mulberry is definitely fruit bearing (yum!). is is true that the leaves won't be good for silkies?

ENVY

the mulberry leaves should still be fine, regardless of the fruit/no fruit type.
