you weren't kidding when you said it needs attention right away... horny passed about 2 hours after i posted.

...

the worst part was that it wasn't a very peaceful death... it was hard to watch but i couldn't stop watching... and he kept coming back to life... what causes this gland problem anyway.... i want another cham but i am scared this will happen again. i did a lot of research and kept him in a clean eviroment... wat is the cham least likely to hav this problem

i am sure someone will be able to give you a better idea than me but i would say that getting a veiled is a safe bet

Sorry for the loss of your chameleon.

Jackson's seem to be prone to this. I've never seen it in veileds or panthers.

Can't really tell you why it happens....sorry.

First of all, sorry to hear you lost your jacksonii. How long had his mouth been like that?

As to what causes these infections:
According to my herp vet the build up of glandular material can be caused by a lack of (preformed) vitamin A. The temporal glands always produce some of this rather smelly material, but it can get infected if there is too much of it.

I had this problem with my 3 year old jacksonii a few months ago, the vet cleaned it and prescribed batryl. I also bought a new bottle of reptivite, knowing that the old bottle had probably expired and increased dusting with it to twice a month. The symptoms haven't come back, so it seems to have done the trick.
