My Cham Is Still Kinda Dark

i've been looking at other pictures on here and most other people's chameleons (referring to veiled) seem to be pretty bright. my cham doesnt seem to have any health problems at all and he's pretty active as far as chameleons are concerned. he eats and drinks and backs just fine and he's capable of turning bright cuz he sparks up whenever he's hunting or on my hand. his fecal stuff is fine and his eyes are nice and bulgy too.

i just dont get why mine isn't bright like alot of the other ones i've seen. is anyone else dealing with this?

I would say it just depends on the mood/personality of the chameleon. My rudis is always colorful, but my carpet is typically darker throughout most of the day.

I got a veiled that's always dark.. like army green and brown. I knew his father and he was exactly the same color. I think its in their genes

but some are offering advice without experience.

I don't see any posts above yours where someone was lacking experience? Those of us who chimed in reported that our chameleons also had the same type of coloration, which suggests that we all have "experienced" this issue; there was no one who put forth advice without having experienced it themselves.

Yoka, what does your setup look like?

Perhaps filling that out can get you some nice conclusive answers.

People have chimed in already, but some are offering advice without experience. I would wait for senior members.

i really hate filling that thing out, it takes alot of time. i've gotten feedback on how i filled it out before and everything seemed right as far as what a cage should have. here's the pics though

Some veileds will have a darker coloration than others. Maybe due to stress. Other times, a dark veiled is trying to absorb the available heat. You can try to increase the wattage of the heat bulb, providing it is not more than a 75 to 100 watts. Also, try taking him outside and see if he lightens up. Some chams will really brighten up being outside.

yeah i want to try that but i'm worried about the whole d3 thing. i'm giving him calcium with d3 every 3rd and 4th day so i'm kinda scared of overdoing it with natural sunlight. it says on the label that taking the cham outside for more than an hour can be dangerous if i'm using the supplement : ( the light/heat absorbtion makes sense though, that's what i was thinking

I strongly agree with the take him outside statement. My jacksons is always green but as soon as he catches some natural sunlight his yellows start to show and he becomes a very beautiful soft green.

I have a veiled who went through a rather ugly "brown" stage. He looked very dull, and at about 1 1/2 years his colors brightened up tremendously. I know this happens occasionally, and depending on your guys age, may be the same situation.

Hey Yokozooma,

Any reason for using Cal w/d3 so often? Providing proper UVB lighting along with d3 once every 2 weeks is sufficient. I would cut it back and get your guy out for some natural sun. Whats the rest of your supplement schedule intale? We just want to get you on the right track, and catch any issues early.:)

Veileds are often very bland and dark in colour. It is perfectly normal, and not neccessarily something to worry about. Bright colours are displayed when they are stimulated. If your veiled is naturally calm and does not excite easily, it may appear dark more often than not.
