My Chameleon Died Yesterday

My girl was one year and nine months old. I have had her since she was five months old. At the end of February she had surgery to remove her eggs and also her ovaries. She did remarkably well, had two checkups since then and was not having any issues whatsoever.

Everything was normal yesterday. As usual, in the morning she was on her top branch, waiting for me to feed her. I always put crickets in a little bowl and she eats out of the bowl. Yesterday, she "hit" two crickets at one time. I thought it was a too big a mouthful, but she seemed OK. She reared up her head for just a second, but then just went back to her normal self and basked under her light.

A couple hours later I found her dead at the bottom of her cage. She had already lost her color when I found her.

Did she choke on her food? I don't know what else could have happened to her, unless she fell and broke something that killed her. Her cage is full of plants though, so she could not have fallen far.

Any thoughts? I am heartbroken. :(

I'm so sorry for your loss! I also recently lost a female chameleon. She did not have any surgery or egg laying complications but her clutches were so large (averaging about 50 eggs each) that she wore herself out; she was about the same age.

Considering how you went to the vet and went to check ups too, I know you care about your chameleon. You did all you could do. My chameleon used to be quite eager for food and she would grab a few little moths at once or even a two medium sized crickets every once and a while. I'm not an expert, but maybe your chameleon was still a bit weak and couldn't deal with that much food at once. I know how heartbreaking it is, and I'm so sorry for your loss.

I lost my best friend yesterday too! She didn't eat for a week due to egg binding I'm guessing. Had a viking style cremation 2 hours ago. I like to think we all come from the Lord and we all return to be with Him. I think the stress from having eggs kills them just like humans sometimes do. I'm sorry, bud.
