My Chameleon Room Redesigned

Thank you so much for posting this! I was thinking about re-doing my chameleon setups as well, and this is exactly what I was looking for. You take superb care of your chams and it shows! A+ setups. I like how the bottom is completely bare for easy poop cleanup.

Thank you! I was inspired by that photo that was up here a little while ago with the cages in the office setting, silver cages on metal tables and I thought it looked so clean and professional. So this is as close as I got to that look, but I love it.

(I keep remembering points I wanted to make in the OP lol)
I should also add - I also left the floor bare for the females, in a way that I can put their laying bin on the floor and then lay a fake bottom over it with an hole cut out so they are more likely to think the laying bin really is the ground. Some females are pickier about where they lay, and my panther certainly is, so I wanted to keep this as an option in case I didn't want to move her to a trashcan to lay.

Thanks guys!

Just thought I'd mention this - Another reason I went for screen cages again is that they are insect proof, and I really wanted my guys to have to hunt for their food again. With the ones I built I was down to hand/cup feeding only and I didn't like doing that for every meal. I think it makes them lazy and bored. So I'm happy to be able to let out a few crickets and watch them have to run the cage up and down for them. All animals should have some stimulation.

Im really starting to re-think FRing because of this.

Ive noticed Donahue is getting lazier and lazier:rolleyes:

I think its actually a "serious" issue, and have pretty much decided to re-cage him soon.

I may have to steal this setup design from you as well. I have a spare room with nothing but an office desk and and guest bed. I think the guest bed is going to have to go. ;)

Me too, it's one of the reasons I wanted to do this. Daedalus is a fat boy, and really needs to move more again. And they say that pregnant women that stay active have a better time during birth, who's to say that female chams that also stay active don't have a better go of it? Just seems like the most natural thing to do, too.

Nice work Olimpia! I am still partial to your old free range room. That was one of the best!!!!

Thanks Carol! I know, I used to love that room. But it gave me a lot of work too, maintaining it and keeping a sharp eye on the boys.

Thanks everyone else!

Very nice cages. Neat and clean. I like the way its set up with nothing on the bottom. I dont like having to clean around pots and such. Good idea

Excellent work, looks awsome! Keep us posted on how everything does. Have you ever kept bromeliads with chams before? I'm curious how they will do in a chams environment. I've only kept them with dart frogs before.

With chameleons, no, I don't think I have. I have kept them with crested geckos and they did fine, but the conditions weren't the same (not as much light, not as much water, but less constant humidity, etc.) so we'll see how they do here. I don't think they will do poorly, but time will tell. I think they should do well though.

I can post an update to this in a month or two and show how the plants have grown (or worst-case scenario - died lol) in that time.

I'm holding you to that.:)

Very nicely done Olimpia.
For the shelving unit you used. I am trying to pick it out from lowes.com but I am not positive its the same one. You mentioned it was 72x48x24. How did you split the shelf? I assume you indeed used a single unit? The one pictured on lowes website looks as if the legs are solid pieces and are 72" in length. Is this the case or is it a different one? Lowes Shelf

Yep, that's exactly the one. The 4 legs on this unit actually come divided in two in the box, and when you set up like in the picture it comes with a bit that connects the two parts of each leg to make them a sturdy 72" piece. I just left them as two halves. I found it to be the best option for the money, I could fit 4 cages on it exactly for under $100, up until then I hadn't found anything with the same measurements that looked as clean for anywhere near that. I didn't want anything that looked plasticky and cheap, and I think this shelf is simple but does the trick.

Thats awesome. I have been looking for some more shelves for a while now but havent really come across anything that would do what I wanted. Now seeing how this unit has the legs that arent the full 72" is just perfect.

looks gr8 and space effecient! i FR mine but havent noticed them being lazy yet. they'll run after my hand for food ect. but i guess it had to do with personaily, size of fr ect. :)

Thanks! When I free ranged my male he wasn't lazy at all, but when I got him into a huge cage he was, and would run to my hand but that was it lol He'd do 12 steps of exercise and eat his food. Now he has to go up and down and left and right to catch all the loose crickets so I think it'll do his "butterworm-belly" some good!

Yea the girls are the worst. I'm lucky that mine stays lean, but my male has been on a diet for months and he still weighs the same. But the appetites on girls are terrible! lol Yes, I will definitely try to breed them when they get older. I am so in love with them, they are adorable little chameleons.
