my (experimental) auto feeder for crickets.

i just dust heavily 1x/week when i clean and refill the keeper. you could also just put some dust in the jug feeder so they will walk around in it before getting eaten.

ok so i did some experimenting with the flex tube extension. i found that i can extend the tube pretty much as far as i want (within reason) as long as there are no vertical spots in the tube. otherwise they either cant climb up into the feeder resulting in a starving cham or cant climb up to get back into the kricket keeper, resulting in more jumpers / escapees... the new setup has the keeper under the cage with about 4foot of extension on an incline so crix can climb both ways. it's working exactly the same now as it was before with the keeper up against the cage. sorry for the poor quality pic but you get the idea

Great idea!

I have a FF culture attached to my Dart Frog refugium. It works well as long as you let the colony develop for a while first.....other wise the FF's crawl out before they're old enough to lay eggs.

I wonder if you could incorporate this into a hatching cricket colony?

This is an awsome idea!! I am a newbie i just got my cham Tuesday. i may have a solution for attaching the cup.... I was having problems with the cham trying to climb on the fake foliedge and falling so i took some thread and a needle and sewed it to the cage in some spots for more durability. He also was getting stuck on the top of the cage so i stripped the plastic off the end of the vine and put the wire up through the cage top and twisted it in place like a bread tie on the outside and it worked great she no longer falls on the branches and leaves and also has a way down from the top now. Maybe you could use a small gage wire and stick it through the cup and tie on the outside that way it's not permanent but will hold if your cham climbs on it. (sorry if this is a dumb idea)

How about attaching the tube at a level that pinhead crickets can't reach it but say 1/2" crickets could. Then as the crickets get large enough to be food they can exit stage left. :)

I really have to say I am 100% against this idea. The set-ups do not look bad or anything like that, rather there are several fundamentals that are missing that generally are used to ensure healthy chameleons.

What are the other fundamentals? The one major one I can think of is supplementation. There's probably a way around that too if thought about enough. But the crickets could be gut loaded with your cricket food. And your supplements could be given with the other insects that you're feeding them.

What else do you feel needs addressed?

i been watching this thread and i like the idea ,i been getting some ideas of my own and as far as dusting the crix could be arranged. i been getting ideas because if i could setup a autofeeder it would save my time.

I know this is VERY old but this is kinda cool...if the crix cant get out. Anyone have any ideas to improve this?

Dustin

dont feed your crickets those terrible orange cubes! they are garbageeee. use flukers gut load, it is a powder type food and the crickets loveee it. i also use the flukers "water" its green and jello like the crickets love it as well. but seriously, the orange cubes suckkkk

is the inside of the tube that goes from the keeper to the jug lined or rough? The dubias would slip, otherwise. I would think the crix would too so I am guessing it is. I think it would work for non-climbers except that they are, for the most part, nocturnal feeders, that said, they may not find their way back in so the cham would have access to them anyway. If I EVER get my order of bio-vine and other supplies from reptiledepot (WHY do I order from those guys??? - two freakin' weeks ago!) so I can redo Cy's cage I will experiment for my week long trip in December. I hope to have someone checking in but don't think I Will have the original daily help that I expected. Your ingenious idea came at the right time :D - now I hope my order does!

lol you ordered from reptile depot ? they suck im real close to that plave and noone has a good word say bout them check out faunas boi on them youll never order from them again

It is old haha. But this is the first time I have ever seen it, since we bought our first chameleon in February of this year. I'm actually glad someone saw this again and commented on it. We are going away in August and have someone to take care of our chams, but this idea is so great! If only there was a better way to get the tub inside of the cage without cutting huge holes.

it is an oldie, but i'm glad someone pulled it up from the depths.
sounds like a good possibility if your away for a weekend..... but i wouldn't want to rely on it long term...

Awesome idea! I just came across this post while trying to find answers for other thing. I can't use it now but I will be using it in the future!
