My first Panther

Hi, I thought I would share pictures of my first Panther. I only collected him Thursday and he seems to be settling in very quickly. Within a space of 20 minutes of being in his new home he was happily eating fruit flies. These are his first pictures.

I have yet to name him. Thinking of calling him Wallis?

This panther is a Sirama male. His farther is a beautiful stunner (considered to be one of the best looking chameleons in the breaders collection) so i can't wait to see how this little chap turns out.

Great looking little guy and I think Wallis is an awesome name. :)

I was waiting for someone else to say something but I guess I will be the one.

That enclosure , the glass one. Is that just temporary for the baby until he moves into a screen enclosure?

I live in the UK so I got him from Gatewick Reptiles which specialise in breading panthers.

Yes it is a glass viv but Don't worry, it is only temp, once he is a big boy he will move to a bigger mesh viv. As he is 10 weeks old and cost £200 which i guess is almost $400, I want to ensure he has the best start hence why i'm using a glass viv. He seems to be doing well, always eating altough he only seems to be eating fruit flies at the moment.

In your view, for a panther that young would you use a basking lamp in a small viv (exo terra 12" x 12" x 18") or would just using the zoomed 5 uv tube be ok?

Hi Phil.

Thats a great looking guy you got there! is there a chance we can see a pic of his dad? For babies, i see alot of 5.0 ONLY setups being recommended.

A small basking area using maybe a 50 watt bulb is what I would do. I started using a basking light with my 12 week old ambanja. He seemed to enjoy it. They are a little slow getting out from under the bulb so I would be sure the basking area is no more than 85. Mine would sit there with his mouth open. I was able to fix that by raising the bulb a little and keeping the basking area around 85. I provided a lot of places to hide and made sure the rest of the cage was pretty cool.

i have a female from the same clutch, i did have a male but unfortunately i lost it, my brother also bought another sirama that the breeder had, he is settling in at the moment, we havnt quite bonded just yet lmao.

He means it died? How long has you and your brother had yours for. I collected mine last Thursday and he seems to be doing rrally well although I'm concerned he is not getting enough suppliments as i have not seen him eat the mini crix i've dusted as he ia always hunting down the fruit flies which are impossile to dust.

What is a good cleaning routine to have with a baby panther?

Hi Phil
I think he should be off the fruit flies and onto small crickets by now. I have mine in an exo terra and I wipe the bottom clean at least twice a day, also remove any poop as soon as it appears, clean all around the rest of the viv every few days. I agree with the basking lamp advise, a 50 watt is plenty and keep it well up off the top of the viv, so he cant get to hot if he climbs onto the mesh, set the basking temp to around 85 degrees.

mine are still on fruit flies but they do take crix aswell, if you need to dust them put a load into a sandwhich bag, my whole house is full of fruit flies! i see we are all fans of the exo terras then!

yea i just put my 1 month old onto pinhead crickets, im sure hes had enough of the fruit flies already. I just take my guy out of his small cage. and run his enclosure under a super hot shower until it overflows for about 15 minutes once a week. it gives us time to "bond" anyways :p. His twigs and plants are secured down so tipping it over and dumping out the excess water is no biggie. i dont use any substrate. not even paper towels. Pinheads crawl right under even when the towels are wet.

Ummm...thats an interesting way of doing it?

How do you guys feed the fruit flys to your baby's? Do you leave a tub of them in the viv or empty some into a cup and feed as and when needed?
