I would personally if considering running water like a waterfall I would use a mesh screening so stuff would not fall into it, I always thought it could still have bacteria overall I like it was that a mist king under the setup I use a promist 80 with 50 different valves

I figured leaving the mesh off would be better. behind the rocks is an 1 inch in diameter pipe for the water to fall back down, and the air stone is under the rock to keep any kind of sediment pushed back up to the top of the water too drain down to be filtered.
