Welcome to the forum!
Congrats on your new addition!
I guess you have all of your homework done?
Lighting, Temp, Caging, Decor, Water, Feeders, Supplements, Etc.
I think so, been reading and asking al ot of questions on there, here was my enclusre week or so ago whilst setting up.
Only thing is the enclusre is fairly large for such a young cham (was part of a nov clutch), what I did this morning was transfered him to a small tank with the crickets in where he ate a few and then stuck him back in the enclosure, seemed to do the job
That is a pretty smart idea, but you can try cup feed him.
This way you can leave and not worry about the crickets running wild in the large cage.
You dont want them to chmp on him while he is sleeping at night.
It may take him some time to figure out that his food is in the bowl, but it is great training for when he is older.
You may want to switch to worms and roaches later on in his life and I dont like to free range either one.
Plus a variety will help keep him from goin on a hunger strike too.
-Good luck
You can use a Dixie cup or tupperware with a lid.
Take the tupperware lid and cut a whole in the Top. So when the lid is on the tupperware their is a one inch lip around the rim.
Can you picture that?
one loves it! as soon as i drop anything into the bowl, he rushes over and perches over the top of it and starts snapping the insects up like crazy. my other guy... hes having issues catching on i think. I'm taking him into the vet tomorrow, he hasnt eaten much if anything since friday.
any suggestions on my predicament, please see my post:
Ok, not sure what a Dixie cup is, dont think its something we have over here but I think I get what you mean. That would be simpler than getting him out every morning, will have a look into it.
if the crickets are jumping out, you could remove their back legs. I heard thats a good thing to do anyways for young chameleons as the legs are spiny and could possibly hurt the babies mouths
I cup feed. I started off with the tupperware container under and close to the basking site so they were sure to see it. After they caught on which wasnt long I made a few different places to place the container. This way I think simulates more of the hunting part. It is a pain but I pinch off the back legs of the crix this way they dont jump and the container doesnt have to be very deep. When your cham starts eating bigger crix the back legs of the male crix have the chripers which are sharp on them. Ive read about these causing mouth infections so pinching them i am sure is a good thing.
Going to try and find a tub on my lunch break today to try this method of feeding, not too convinced about my first attempt, not sure he took anything this morning, does anybody have pics of their feeding cups with the lip on them?
Made myself a feeding cup from a plastic pasta snack pot, just cut a small hole in top and the little fella took no time in getting down and sticking his head and tongueing some crickets!
