my veiled...help

If you are looking to save a few bucks, you can get the linear tube housing at wal mart or home depot for like $7. Just take out the bulb and replace it with a reptisun bulb. I hope your vet trip goes well.

Jaidensmomma said..."i'm just using 2 full spectrum house bulbs"...I believe that full spectrum house bulbs don't include the UVB needed.

Yeah, it is a temporary situation. She has a compact that might be effecting her chameleon's eyes. So she has removed it until her reptisun 5.0 tube comes later this week. ;)

walmart carries the lighting fixtures? sweet!!! I'll check it out!:D
yeah, the house lights are temporary until tomorrow. YAY paid day!!
I'm really hoping that it'll help. and we're still going to the vet just to make sure that everything is good.

as with the recent comments about UVB, are you able to provide natural sunlight during the day? in order for it to be effective, it needs to have no barriers like glass/plastic and during peak uvb times to go through the window screen and your cage (11am-3 pm for the most part). it is still cold where i live, but if i have my back door open (southwest) the warm light comes in with no breeze or cold. i just let my cham hang out and bask on a plant (supervised) and he seems to love it! he flattens his body and turns towards the light to absorb the heat/light. he has the chance to get out of the sun as well because i position the plant so it's partly shaded. the temp there for my guy is about 85F - low for a basking temp for his age at 8 months - but he doesn't get to stay there long or after eating a meal. a few good hours of peak uvb exposure would do your chameleon good and help with absorption of calcium.

are you using the supplement with Calcium & D3? it sounds like your cham is fairly young so it would not be too bad to dust most of his prey with it until you get the tube. i am curious to know if his prey is appropriately sized because he may not be able to digest it properly if it is too large, and may not be interested if it is too small. if i was reading right, your chameleon is 4" from nose to tip of tail? sounds to me like he is a very young little dude! in this case, his basking temps should be lower in the high 80's and ambient about 70ish. temps at night can go to about 65 for proper routine.

i hope i have been a little bit helpful :)

i took the evil compact uv bulb off the cage 2-3 days ago. i have been dusting his crix every other day, with calcium and reptivite. unfortunately i work all day so he doesn't get to be outside right now. he's pretty small still and until he starts eating more i'm going to be kinda paranoid. the only crix i'm able to find in our area are either large or small, there don't seem to be any medium ones! he won't eat the large ones, and i don't think the small one's are enough anymore. any ideas on that? i don't really have any place to keep a large store of crickets and they drive my boyfriend nuts! LOL

You might wanna get roaches. They are so easy to keep! It sounds nasty... but, they really are a good feeder too keep. Not messy and smelly and they don't make a sound!

i second what summoner said about roaches specifically blaptica dubia.
after a while, you'll get over the fear of having roaches in your house.
plus dubia is not an invasive species. Meaning that in case they escape, they will simply die instead of multiplying and invading your house.

There are so many feeders available beside crix that are much more healthier.
Silkworm and horn worms are my favorites.
Check my blog to see other type of feeders that are healthy alternative than crix.

I have no idea where to even start looking for silkworms or horn-worms in the area! i really don't have a lot of place to store them either. I've been buying crickets cuz they are readily available as i just pick them up when leaving work. i tried to give him a waxworm the other day, but i couldn't hold my arm still long enough!

online. www.mulberryfarms.com
you can buy silkworm in a pod.
it includes food. so you don't need to gutload.
pop the pod in the closet.
take the pod out and grab the worm and feed it to your chameleon (just put the worm on the vines. they are so slow, that they won't get too far before your cham gobbled it up. no need to hand feed).
and put the pod back when finished.
as simple as that. if you have space for crickets, you definitely have space for silkworm pod.

hope that helps

I have a question about the silkworm pods, maybe the answer might also help Jaidensmomma.

What's the best way to store these silkworm pods? I got one and about halfway through it all the silkies died. (There were probably about 50 worms in the pod I received so roughly 20-25 worms died). I was storing it at room temperature (~70 degrees).

There are pretty detailed instructions for the hornworm pod in the FAQ on the mulberry farms website. Should I just follow those?

how big were the worms?

Some seemed very small, maybe 1/4 to 1/2". others were bigger around 1" to a little more.

I just went back and looked at the mulberry farms website and they say:
We can NOT guarantee any specific size silkworm in our cups. If you have a size preference please mention this in the comment section upon checkout and we will TRY to accommodate you. we can NOT put Large/Jumbo Silkworms in the cup)

To me that means it is all small/medium worms.

We went to the vet today... Karma seems healthy other than the yellow pee stuff! But the vet thinks that may be a problem with his liver. :( He force feed and watered him, and did a fecal swab. i should have the results back in a couple days.
I'm totally stressed out about it!!

The vet also gave me this food i'm supossed to train the chameleon to eat. its called Insectivore Fare and is made by Reliable Protien Products. has any one heard of this stuff?
He also told me to up the photoperiod to 16 hours. Would that be ok?

and here are some pic's of Karma at the vet.

Photo period? as in keeping the lights on for 16 hours?! That might be a bit stressful. They know it is winter time.... But I guess you could try it. Maybe try 14 hours of light? Were you able to get your UVB?

I get my employee discount at petco, but other than that no places that i know of. The vet said i didn't really need a uv light but could use a light called vitalite it's a full spectrum bulb of some sort i'm guessing. i have no idea about it ir why the vet would say i don't need a uv light

Geez. Shows you how much some Vets know. Had he ever seen a chameleon before? I have also never heard a Vet say "train" your chameleon to eat this. This all sounds very strange to me. Please get a Zoomed Reptisun 5.0 linear flourescent bulb ASAP. Keepers have been using those for a long time with great sucess.

I'm going too! trust me! The food thing I'm unsure about so i sent an email to the company. It looks like from their website, that they make "complete" food for animals, stuff they'd eat in the wild, ya know? so I asked them if they would feed it to a chameleon and how i would go about it. its like squishy dog food pellets and the vet said to shove a cricket into a little bit of it so Karma starts to like the taste, and then once he does start cutting back on the cricket in side and adding more food, so eventually he'll eat only the food pellets.
sounds stupid, to me.
