Need help deciding between two lights

Here are the lights:Zoo Med Naturalistic Terrarium Hood, 18-Inch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001HWBPVI/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_kvv0ub0ACWDEG

Zoo Med ReptiSun® Terrarium Hood, 36-Inch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003UV8T90/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_Yvv0ub19R6X8J

I want to decide everything I will need for when I make my new cage. The 36" is nice because there will be a lot less wire to looks bad. I also think that getting two 18" ones would be nice. There are more cables to mess around with but you can also put different bulbs in as well such as basking bulbs. My idea is to put some 6500k plant bulbs in to help with plant growth. I anyone can help my decide that would be much appreciated. Thank you

Well, all you really need for the cham is one ordinary house light bulb for basking and a UV source, so you really only need one receptacle for the incandescent bulb and one for the florescent (Reptisun or Arcadia) bulb. And, if you want to light more of the cage evenly the longer hood would do that for you in the simplest way. I have used this combination on all my cages and my plants have done fine with them. If you were trying to get a special plant to bloom or had something that really needs maximum light maybe another bulb could be added. Its just another fixture. If I have a very tall cage and need to keep my plants bushier I will sometimes add a "used" ReptiSun in a fixture oriented vertically along one side of the cage. Get more use out of the Reptisuns that way too.

Hi Carlton,

I am curious about the lights as well. Did I read correctly that I can use an ordinary house light bulb for my Cham's basking area!? I have a young male and my caged is 16x16x30. What wattage do you recommend? His basking branch is about 10 inches from the current bulb. And does it need to be specifically an incadecent light? The mushroom shaped ones? The hood fixture I have right now is small and doesn't light the lower half of his cage, should I get an additional light for the side, or just a bigger hood fixture? The current one I have now is the mini-double that came with the cage kit..

Hi there. I can answer your questions for you. Yes, you can use a regular white housebulb, it can be the mushroom type or the old fashioned type. The spiral ones really do not give off heat like the other kind. In a cage that small you only want one basking area as you want a cool side at the top of the cage also. The wattage will really depend on your house temp, so you might have to play around with some different wattages to get the basking temp you want. You could raise the branch up a couple of inches also if you are having trouble getting the correct temp. Not too much higher than that though. I use one basking bulb in a corner and one tube style uvb light that I have positioned diagonally across the top of a cage that size. That is just one option and the way I do it.

Yep, Carol answered your questions! All the basking bulb needs to provide is heat, so any bulb that gets warm enough will work. CFLs don't get very warm.
