Neonate Prolapse Help

Hey guys and gals,

I’ve never had this issue before. One of my neonates has a prolapse. I was just transferring it to it’s enclosure from the incubation container and found it.

I applied some Naturally Unique Reptanicals prolapse care to it and I’m worried because it’s not going back in.

I can get KY jelly on it, but I figured the other stuff might be better since it’s holistic. It contains: Virgin Coconut Oil, beeswax, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil and food grade vitamin e oil

Let me know what you guys suggest I do.

Have you tried sugar water to shrink it down?

Like Lynda said try sugar water soaks to shrink it and kelp it moist with KY jelly. He’s so tiny I’m not sure if your vet can help unless you have a super good chameleon vet. I hope he is able to pull it back in. He’s such a little cutie.

Yeah. I saw one of Jann’s posts suggesting it. I found it hard to soak it’s vent because it would constantly run away. I am afraid of it falling and getting hurt or falling in a bow of water and getting the sugar in its eyes.

I did, however, use a spoon over an empty bowl and slowly poured the cold sugar water over its vent. Same problem, he would run away or get close to falling.

Maybe theres a better method? Maybe salt water?

Either way I have to take it to work to make sure it’s got the prolapse stuff on its vent till I can go to the vet tomorrow

I’ve always used KY. A lady at the spa told me that coconut oil can dry my shin and you want to keep it moist. I’d put a moist paper towel in the bottom of his baby bin, too.

K-Y jelly is benign...it doesn't heal or dry or do anything but keep the tissue moist. If the tissue drys out it will become necrotic.

As for using salt water...don't do that...the sugar water shrinks the swelling and you want to soak the pink tissue that is sticking out with it (not really the cloaca).

I called Dr. Greeks office and he’s only in on Wednesdays right now. The earliest they can see the cham is Monday with his colleague, Dr. Moore due to being closed over the weekend. I’m going down there on Monday for a 10a appointment. Is the best thing I can do till then to follow the two aforementioned suggestions?

Whew I’m glad I read this first. I’ll use a cotton ball saturated with the sugar water to see if that is a better method.

So I found a method of performing the application of sugar water and KY

It’s on a q tip resting and not running around.

I’m using a cotton ball saturated with the sugar water and dripping it over the prolapse or holding it around the prolapse and q tip.

Switching off between the gel and water every 5 mins or so. I’ve tried pushing the prolapse back in a couple times with the end of a wet q tip. It gets halfway in and comes back out again.

Been doing this close to 40 mins typing this post with 1 finger while cham is in other hand.

IMHO as long as you're keeping it wet with the sugar water you don't need to put the K-Y jelly on....the sugar water will be keeping it moist...and the layer of jelly may even stop the sugar water from being able to shrink the prolapse....just my opinion. I'd put the K-Y jelly on after.

Regarding pushing it back in...you have to be very careful not to cause a tear...and it may need a purse string suture to keep it back in...you need a vet to do that.

Haha yeah well now I feel dumb. That makes sense. I ended up fishing up after my last reply. Put some KY on it before lights out. It’s home now on it’s rack with its other sibling. I’ll apply more sugar water tomorrow after I’m up.

It’s ok. No worries. I’m curious because it wasn’t like there was many variables between the egg container and the enclosure. The hatching before this one is doing great.
Do you think it’d be a bad idea to feed it?

It’s not doing much different than yesterday. I like to believe it’s understanding that I’m trying to help it. It kind of sticks it’s vent out for me to apply the sugar water. There was a couple times it seemed to be going back in today without me pushing it. Unfortunately it’s still sticking out. Applied KY after I soaked the prolapse in sugar water. I’m hoping I can get it through the weekend till the vet on Monday.

Okay. What would you say a good method for providing Pedialite would be? I’m afraid to hurt the little one with a syringe since it’s so tiny and fragile. Would misting the Pedialite instead of water be ok?

Interesting. How can you tell the difference between the two? Do you have pics?
