Nero - Health Update.

I posted about my male Oustalet's health back in November. He wasn't feeding and whilst his condition didn't deteroriate health wise I knew there was a problem. He was diagnosed with pustules at the rear of his throat and prescribed Baytril. Following further consultations it was noted that whilst the pustules are receding they are not clearing. Nero is now on a course of Metacam oral suspension which is an anti-inflammatory drug. The two meds are given orally each morning. He also gets a fruit grub or 2 thrown in to ensure he is getting some nutrition. His weight hasn't fluctuated and he's still a healthy 500 grammes. His next appointment is on 2nd Jan, if the pustules are still showing minimal improvement the vets will anesthetise Nero and remove the pustules. He simply cannot continue with the current regime.. He's very tame but it is highly stressful for him to be forced to endure the continuation of meds each and every morning. I have added a photo of Nero at the vets & will let you know the outcome.

I remember your last post about this problem. I hate that Nero's issues have yet to subside. Enduring round after round of meds is hard on chams, which is why I hope that the Metacam does the trick and the surgery can be avoided altogether. Keeps us posted and good luck.

Many thanks for your kind comments. It isn't a good place to be with him, whilst the medication is showing some signs of improvement, in reality it's only preventing the infection worsening. We have taken swabs and we are using the only suitable antibiotic based upon the swab results, my concern is that he has been on Baytril for quite a long time. I'll let you know how things go on Saturday.

Had a quick look today whilst administering his meds. They are receding but its painfully slow. He has been on antibiotics for a month now so we need to draw the line at some point, that point will be on Saturday unless the vet states otherwise. I am getting food into him but nowhere near how much a 500 gramme male Oustalet should be consuming.

Following on from my earlier post/s I can now say that we are beginning to see some progress with Nero's condition. The Metacam is helping to reduce the inflammation and the Baytril is fighting the infection. He will continue under this regime for another week. Fingers crossed, whilst progress is slow, it is still progress and better than a more evasive process at this time.

A further update on Nero. Following a vet visit today it was confirmed the antibiotic medicine and the anti inflammatory medicine has cleared the infection, however Nero is still refusing to eat voluntarily.It has been decided he will be anesthetised tomorrow where the vets will check the rear of his throat for any further infection not cleared by the Baytril. The good news is whilst he has been on the medication I have managed to feed him some food and his weight remains a fighting fit 500 grammes. Further update following his checkup tomorrow.

I'm so glad to hear that there has been some progress with Nero! I hope that the procedure goes smoothly tomorrow. Hopefully he will be back to his old self in no time. Keep us updated.

Thursday January 14th. Following Nero’s checkup it has now been confirmed the infections preventing him from feeding have been neutralised. Whilst under the anaesthetic he was throughly inspected to ensure there was no further infection at the rear of his throat. His tongue was also checked for infection and functionality. He has been given a clean bill of health on all counts. A swab was taken to check for any additional infection. Results due in a few days.
I am now going to leave Nero for the next few days for him to settle back into normal life, I will offer him food (Medium sized locusts) from time to time. No more medication unless directed by the vets following the test results next week.

That's awesome news!!! I'm glad to hear that he can get back to normal living!

Thursday January 21st. Following on from the lab test results taken last week it has emerged he is still suffering from a biological infection,this type of infection will not respond to Baytril. He has now been prescribed Ronaxan which is administered every 72 hours, this has to be taken with food as it can affect the food tract. His weight has also dropped by 20 grammes which is probably due to a lack of food.It has been my intention to leave Nero to fend for himself following last weeks vet visit due to the stress levels previously experienced. His next dose of medication is due on Sunday. This will always be supported with food. He has enough medication for three weeks. Lets hope this finally produces the results & he gets back to feeding voluntarily.

If he isn't eating do you think it wise not to force feed him?

He is force fed. He gets a few locusts at the time of the meds. This is a regime I have been carrying out from the early part of his treatment, Other than the lack of voluntary feeding Nero is in fine health.
